hmmm hiv?

so back in october I had what most people would call a one night stand. We used protection... and I'm assuming the condom never broke but how do I know? I knew the guy for at least a month though but either way... we haven't talked after that. :/ blah. anyways, about a week and a half after that, I came down with a terrible terrible cold. I had a sore/swollen throat with white spots on the tonsils (I could hardly talk), swollen glands, a bit of a fever and of course, I was tired. I went to the doctors and they had me do a throat culture which came back fine. he also had given me antibiotics. They worked and I was back to normal. A month after that, I got sick with almost the exact same thing except it was a bit worse. I had a swollen sore throat w/white spots, swollen glands, nausea (I did throw up this time) and a tad bit of a fever. My doctor did yet another throat culture.. came back fine. and he put me on a different antibiotic. which worked fine..... but now, I'm kind of afraid. I feel fine now but I read you don't get symptoms til later down the line. I don't know. I did stop taking my antibitoics after I started feeling well the first time I got sick so I'm thinking maybe that explains why I got sick again. I could get tested but do I really have a reason to worry? and does a bacterial infection mean I have HIV or is it just viral infections?

Your symptoms sound like an upper respiratory infection of some sort. Your symptoms came back because you didn't take all of the antibiotics as prescribed. Had it been HIV, the antibiotics would have had no effect whatsoever.

No matter what, if you are having unprotected sex, you should stay aware of your STD status. It is always smarter to get tested rather than not know.

Being aware and wary of STDs is also a great reminder to use condoms so that you don't have to be scared next time you come down with something more common.

not too experienced here so hah...
so I guess what I'm kind of wondering is would I have had a viral infection (that wasn't cured by antibiotics) instead of a bacterial one for it to have been acute hiv syndrome?

HIV is viral. If your condom would have failed you would have known it.
