swallowing semen

i am very concerned...i am a female, performed oral sex on an african american male in NYC with unknown status.  I had been drinking heavily and he ejaculated in my mouth and I swallowed.  I am worried sick to my stomach that I now have HIV.  I think I might die from the anxiety.  I am so confused about the statistics as I do not know if they involved swallowing semen...please help me.

This discussion is related to HIV Receptive with ejaculation.

by Emily_MHModerator,
And to clarify, it is this site's stance, based on studies and our own MedHelp experts (all of whom are world-renowned for their work in this field), that oral sex carries no risk for HIV.

actually I'm so confused...just read this reply from a doctor on this site after person said they performed oral on HIV positive person with NO ejaculation...

Low risk for any single exposure, but not zero.  The actual risk depends on such things as the state of your oral health (e.g., gum inflammation), the stage of your partner's HIV infection (immune function, viral load), whether or not either of you has other STDs (e.g., herpes), whether or not he is taking anti-HIv drugs, and probably other factors.  Your risk is lower for not having been exposed to semen.

thanks teak...
the scenarios and the information found on the net can be very overwhelming and confusing.   guess you would have to be gushing from the mouth in order to be concerned.

what if you've been drinking?  Can that interfere with the saliva's capability?

No worries. Oral sex is not a risk even if semen is swallowed. The virus begins to break down by proteins in saliva, and further breaks down by gastric enzymes. You are okay.

I was counseled by a social worker at the HIV testing clinic that swallowing semen actually reduces the risk of infection because it takes it away from the mouth. btw, the risk of getting hiv from oral sex or semen in the mouth is almost nonexistant.
