Can I trust my oral HIV test results

Dear doc,

I really need some help about 8 or 9 years ago I had  unprotected sex with a women of unknown status. A year later I met my wife and we have been monogamous for 7 years now. She had a similar indecent to me prior to us meeting. Since then neither one of us have had an HIV test and over this time I have had shingles and she has had vial Pharyngitis. Well for the last 2 years we have been trying to start a family andthe Dr has ordered an HIV test. I was scared to death that I took 4 of the new oraquick rapid oral HIV antibodie test. All for can back negative no question...I followed the
directions to a "t". My question is can I rely on these results to be conclusive. Thanks for all your help and God bless.

Lizzie,

I have one last question I know I have said that before but I promise after this I will sign out and not come back. My wife took the same at home test I took and it was negative  the rapid oral test. Is there any reason to believe that when she has her blood test at the end of the month it would show something different

you're welcome.

if you cannot get past this on your own...seek out the help of a mental health professional.

this forum really has nothing left to offer...you are conclusively negative.

Thank you both for your guidance...I have been so nervous that I couldn't get happy about the results I was afraid the test weren't as advertised.

Australia doesn't have HIV rapid tests let alone home testing.

Best news for the USA now that home HIV testing is avaliable--you watch how many more people will test now and be aware of their status,it's unbelievable we don't have them here in Australia. You can relax now,you have a conclusive result.

I know I am probably going to get your move on after this but the reassurance will be well worth it... Let me first start by saying thank you, so you are saying that if these test are taking correctly and post window perio are very accurate. So since my exposure was so long ago my wife and I should be good to go. I promise this will be my last question and I can't thank you and the doctors enough for all you do in this forum... Have a great rest of you weekend

It has it's pros and cons. I personally don't like it because you aren't in the company of a medical professional when you read the results.

So after 7 years I can trust my results...thanks... On another note what is your opinion of the at home test...good or bad... The reason I ask is because I have been a reck over the past week and done a lot of research and I wanted Ruhr opinion of a professional

Yes the test is reliable and you wouldn't get a false negative after 3 months. Yes I am an education and no we do not accept donations. If you feel a need to donate, donate to your local HIV organizations and thank you for the offer.
