Of that list, I would be suspicious of the Ceruvin & Betaloc as reasons for my thinning hair. Those are known side effects of those drugs. But, as Ed has mentioned, a simple blood test to make sure all the other levels are in check will help stop the continued hair loss. I have always had thin hair and now that I am taking the drugs I do, I have had to deal with the side effects. The benefits far out weigh the hair loss. There are wigs or, in my case, I have grown my hair out and wear a ponytail alot. Have your mother talk to the doctor about this and the doctor can order tests to make sure there isn't anything out of whack. Take care and keep me posted. Ally

Do a blood test on her vitamin levels - she may have a vitamin b complex deficiency. Also if she is on a beta blocker, her potassium may be decreased. Is she taking a multi vitamin? I suggest she starts on one like centrum silver...she will be okay after that. Remind her that every vitamin has to be on a full stomach and never never on an empty stomach.
Trauma can cause hair loss and major surgery is certainly a contributor to this. It could of course be totally unrelated, so it's worth getting some blood tests done. In particular have Vitamin b12, folic acid and iron tested. My Wife had major surgery last year, not heart related, but her hair was falling out in clumps everytime she brushed it. Her Doctor checked for those three items and they were just under the borderline. The vitamin b12 has to be injected at intervals and the other supplements are just pills. After just one month her hair stopped falling out and has thickened up again.
I have read in here that this can happen with certain types of blood pressure medicines. It seems to include ace inhibitors and beta blockers. I feel almost sure your mother is taking one or more of these. I know for a fact that Altace can cause significant hair loss or thinning. Let me know what she is taking and I will do a google search and see what I come up with. Take care, Ally.
