The heart has to beat harder to overcome the increased resistance of the peripheral vessels - arteries and arterioles - and as a consequence there is an increased need for nutrients and oxygen. Any reduction in the diameter of the coronary arteries - plaque - will reduce blood flow through the heart muscle - ischemia - and if prolonged will lead to muscle damage. The heart will also tend to enlarge due to increased work load. As noted above there are many mechanisms that effect the heart.
As far as I understand, the blood pressure it is not due to the functioning of the heart, but to the resistance of the arterial and venous system.
That resistance it is influenced by many different factors, like different hormones (Adrenaline, Vasopresine, Renine, Angiotensine, Aldosterone ..) and by the Central Nervous System.
