BP results moving in opposing directions! Cause??

My 83 year old mom was rushed to the ER twice in this last week because her BP, though on 100mg of medication for it, was 180/68.  It failed to come down even following her doctor's dispensing three additional pills to her in his office.

He put her on an additional new BP med and she has taken this for 4 days together with the 100 mg topranilol (SP)?.

Now 4 days later, her BP was 182/70, and she is again in the ER tonite.  The PA has told us that her pressure changes are puzzling since they go in opposing directions!   What in the world could be causing this??  She has CAD, emphysema with requiring oxygen, and NPH with a brain shunt.  She has two stents from a 3 year old MI.  Ideas?  We are desperately seeking information about this anomoly.

I'm not a doctor, but my Mother was diagnosed with NPH in 1998 and is now on her 3rd shunt. (One in 1998, the 2nd in Jan. 2008 less than 2 months after having bypass surgery, and the 3rd was replaced in June 2008 on an emergency basis.) I did a quick Web search and didn't find anything about blood pressure increases related to shunt failure.

How long has your Mom has her shunt? (I believe the "average shunt" lasts 8-10 years.) Is your Mom having any other symptoms that might suggest shunt problems?

Shunts can be very tricky and the signs and symptoms of shunt failure, I have learned, can be very individual and can also vary from incident to incident for the same person.

I am not saying these blood pressure changes are due to shunt failure in your Mom's case. But based on our experiences with my Mom, if this was happening to my mother right now, I would call the neurologist and just ask him/her about it--especially if it's been a while since she's seen the neurologist.

Good luck!

As the doctors seem to be baffled, it is not surprise to me you haven't gotten any answers here.  You may want to try a post on the Heart Disease Community too to see what may come back from there.  http://www.medhelp.org/forums/Heart-Disease/show/72

While not a wide, I do sometimes get a BP reading in which one or the other is too high, but not both.  I don't think of that as going in opposite directions.... then too my range is not as high.  I am on a BB, Metoprolol to control my HR, so I also get BP lowering.  I do not have a history of high BP, but my body adjusts to the BB (I believe) and so my BP tends to run near normal, not too low, as it was when I first went on high dose BB (I take up to 200 mg a day).
