pacemaker replacement indication

What is the criteria for deciding when a pacemaker is to be replaced? In 1999 I had a pacer implanted after an AV node ablation, indicated for a-fib/ flutter. I am pacemaker dependent.  My docs said I had to wait till I was"eri" for a replacement, but the insurance company said I could have one every three years with out a letter of medical necessity.  I am anxious to have it replaced due to my dependence: but don't want to rush unnecessarily.  To further confuse matters they said the pacer had 3-6 months left in October, but in January they estimated 4-12 months. I also have mild Mitral and Tricuspid regurgitation, mild left atrial enlargement, and mild septal wall motion abnormality consistant with paced rhythm.

Ouh!  Every 3 years.... I thing I'll give them back the pacemaker.

99pacer, when you had your AV node ablated, were you in sedation, general anesthetic or local anesthetic?  Were they given you the pacemaker straight away after the ablation or you need to wait for a period of time?

Thanks.

Our doc told hubby his would be replaced when the battery had 3-6 months of life left. He's only had it 2 years so far and it has 75% battery so not yet.
