question

Hi all,I havent been here in a while just so busy lately but i need advise.Last oct my hr went very high like 240 bpm and one of the ekg,s at the er was described as crazy. ok anyways that was oct 5 but on oct 1 i had had a tooth filled and novacaine was used and today im supposed to get another tooth filled, anyways im wondering if there is or could be a connection between the dental appointment and that er visit like maybe the novacaine was still in my system and caused the hhr of 240.Im near panic and i dont think im going to get the tooth filled untill i get more information because for SURE i dont want another trip to the er in a few days. Can anyone tell me if the novacaine could have still been in my system 4 days later? Also after the er trip i had a cardiagram that showed i have mvp. Thanks for any advise.

Thanks you guys but before i had time to check here for any replys i decided to just go and talk to my dentist about my concerns when i got there (as i had to go in also to have  a  cleaning) so i went and soon as the nurse got me in the room and the torture chair lol, i told the nurse they had to give me something other than novacaine because i have mvp and hr problems(really my plan was to throw them an excuse as to why they couldent do the filling until another time, but then i decided to just be brave and get it over with, anyways she told me they had novacaine without the ingredient that makes your heart race so she did the cleaning and before i could even think beyond that the dentist was by my side saying now open wide and did the injection and my heart dident race but was beating like a jackhammer from panic and soon the whole thing was over so i sat up and was so dizzy thought i was about to faint but i know that was from the anxiety.God i hate dentist visits but i like my teeth to much to let them become unhealthy and rot out.Brooke i hope i do ok without the antibiotics but if i have any hr problems ill get myself pronto to the er as my dentist dident sugest i take any but then im highly alergic to some of them so that might be why he dident want me to take them.Im just happy its over now but thanks sooo much for caring to reply, you guys here are the greatest!:)

Hi Sheila...

When I have needed any type of dental treatment that  requires an anesthetic, my dentist uses an alternative to Novacaine...Lidocaine(Xylocaine) sometimes combined with Epinepherine. Make sure that your Dentist has a list of your current medications, so that he can be sure that there are no possible drug interactions.

Novacaine has a very short half life, it is about 1.5-2 hours...So 4 days later, it is pretty unlikely that it was still in your system. Since you also have MVP, you should inquire about taking antibiotics before and after any dental treatment.

Good luck at the dentist:)

I looked Novacaine (Novocaine/Novocain) up on the web and found one side possible side effect is "slow, irregular heart beat".  I've never had any noticeable reactions and I had a mouth full last month when I had a redo on a full crown.  I suffer from AFib, so I am (over) conscious of heart beat, and I didn't notice anything.

Some people have allergic reactions, ask you dentist what they think.
