BLOOD TEST POSITIVE

Hello everyone. Thanks for all your support yesterday. If you remember I am in Pembrokeshire UK and had to go back  to doctor today for results.Well they came back positive for HEP C.It seems I contracted the disease in 1984 after TWO blood transfusions. This was before screening starting in the UK.I TRIED to ask my doctor questions but he just said he would now be passing me on to a specialist team.I have to wait TWO week to see them,in the meantime he has given my no information/help whatsoever.I am 52 and telephoned my "partner"(I use the term lightly as we have only been seeing each other for six months)he called me a dirty cow and said he didnt want to see me anymore.CONFUSED.I emailed him at work and explained HOW I had the virus but I think he must be confused (or flaming stupid) as had a very unpleaseant email back and relationship now over.Ah well cel a vie as they say in France (thats life )Best wishes to you all MIFFY

Hepc in not a death sentence nor is it contracted by kissing, sharing utensils, social interaction etc.  The chance of contracting it sexually is very very low. There is still a lot of social stigma attached to having this disease due to ignorance even though there are millions of us with it.  This community knows and understands what it's like to feel that pressure from those that are narrow minded and stupid!!  We can only hope over time, with enough education people will understand better.  I would forget about that fool too.  Way too much negative energy for you to deal with right now. You will need a lot of inner strength and a positive attitude to get through treatment if that is what your doctors decide.  Educate yourself and learn all you can about current treatment and effects the virus has on your body.  Knowledge is power!!  Good Luck

I'm very sorry to hear that it came back positive. I'm sorry that your partner reacted that way, but I must say that you are better out without him. If he calls you a dirty cow, instead of being compassionate and trying to comfort you at a time you need it most.
I really hope that you have family and friends to support you. But you need to know that we are all here to support each other, so you can count on us.

I think it is wise that your GP did not say too much, as he most probably doesn't know much about the disease himself. They cannot study every disease in depth and the best thing he can do is to refer you to a hepatologist team. You will be in the best hands. Two weeks is very fast! I am in Denmark, my GP referred me to the specialist team 3 weeks ago and I haven't even received the letter for the appointment, yet.
Hep c treatment is a waiting game, so you'll need a lot of patience.

I would use the time to educate myself on hep c. Read as much as you can and write down the questions you want to ask your hepatologist. It is great to be prepared. Check out the site I suggested yesterday. www.hepctrust.org.uk

All the best, and don't despair.

To put time in perspective, you've apparently had this for 20-some years without knowing, so what's another two weeks?  You will see in the coming weeks and months that everythng happens slowly at just the point you want to know more and have everything go quickly.  Now is the time for patience and learning as much as you can about diagnosis, treatments, life with hcv and all the other stuff.  Your situation is not far different from others in this forum and most start out pretty much the same; surprise, diaapointment, the need to know more.  At this point, knowledge is your best response.
