Thanks for the encouraging information. So many things to weigh in on when making the decision for treatment -- every bit of feedback helps!
To GrandmaA:
I do understand that this is an HCV forum (and I have indeed visited the Cancer Forum as well), but I address it here because my husband's HCC is categorized as "hep fallout" -- HCV infection is considered the underlaying cause for the liver cancer -- it is one of the unfortunate (if not the most common) progressions of active hepatitis C (fibrosis leading to nodularity leading to full blown tumor). It's our hope that treating the HCV may rid him of the viral infection as well as help prevent further tumor growth/recurrence.
Although I didn't achieve SVR the first go around, I did attain benefit from finishing out the 48 weeks of treatment. I had a BX done before treatment in Oct. '06, began TX in Jan '07, relapsed, and scheduled another BX done at the end which was done Dec '07 showed a reversal of damage. Below are the each of the BX reports showing grade and stage.
Oct'.06- 1/1 ( guided needle BX )
Dec.'07 0/1 and 0/1 ( Laproscopic BX which is a little more invasive. Done with two incisions and a camera showing and actually taking pictures of the entire liver rather than just one place where the needle took from also shows gallbladder, bile ducts and so forth on all ......BTW, this one required me to stay overnight and was somewhat more painful than previous ones. )
They usually aren't recommended by Dr's to be done, but I really pushed for one since I went through the 48 weeks of the abyss for lack of better terms............"I" wanted to know if I benefited from doing the treatment and what course of action to take in thinking of retreatment. Hope that all is well and don't forget to change your clocks one hour forward......:) Until then,
In Him,
Rick
Most patients do improve a stage or grade after tx. However, you don't need another bx, the fibrosure test is good enough. Showed I was normal in 4 out of 6 results and a little inflammation and fibrosis.
Hepatitis is HCV not HCC. Cancer would be another forum, not here.
