Can cirrhosis be reversed?

I have compensated cirrhosis as a result of long term HCV - I am hopefully about to be enrolled on a trial which could eliminate the virus. If the trial is successful for me then obviously my liver will no longer be under constant attack and I'm wondering if anyone has experience - or even anecdotal evidence - or reversing compensated cirrhosis?

Even going back to 'just' having severe fibrosis would be an improvement. I've had the cirrhosis for nearly 5 years but my liver has deteriorated very little in that time, my bloods have remained stable - if anything some of the key markers have slightly improved. I don't smoke, drink or eat meat and I run 20 to 25 miles a week - this is my own 'drug free' TX. I've done everything I can to stay healthy and I'm hoping to slowly heal my liver if I get SVR - can it be done?

I wish you the very best.  I cleared the HCV over 2 1/2 years ago.  It did take time for the echotexture to change from the roughness.  My platelets took time to get in to the normal range.

Just like the two people who came back to tell us their level of damage had decreased.
I think it is wonderful news.

Thanks for all the encouragement. I don't believe the side effects of the sofosbuvir + GS 5816 combination are too bad, most people seem only get mild or even no adverse symptoms. Light headedness and fatigue, but if you have HCV those are more or less part of daily life anyway!

I very strongly believe that a cirrhotic liver can be improved. As I posted above I'm starting off with an ultrasound of between 17 and 23 kpa, that's quite a broad range but these scans are known to vary depending on things like when you last ate and a host of other factors.

My target is get below 13 or 14 kpa. Let battle commence on Tuesday.....

Hi
Yes for folks like me I have had hep c for probably 36 years. I treated with everything I could but was a null responder.

Meanwhile my liver became progressivly more and more damaged to the point of cirrhosis diagnosed in Jan 2008.

Even if I am cured with Harvoni I hope my liver may improve some over time but I could still decompensate and especially still get liver cancer even thought I hopefully have eridicated the virus. However, I have seen them say that the chance of liver cancer for me would be reduced if I do make SVR but not to that on a person without cirrhosis.

And if I do end up having the need fo rtransplant at least I won't have hep c attacking the new liver.
