Dr.'s Attitude

I have been going to UCSD,( San Diego,Ca.) for just about 2 yrs. now. I have HepC geno type 3,& cirrossis, 2 yrs.ago I was told it was stage 4. I have had nine million tests over and over. Last May (09) my Dr. finally wrote the script for the treatment, interfiron and pills, but because my insurance would not let me use the lab at UCSD, I had to use another one that can't seem to get the results to my Dr. in a timely manner or at all, he said I can't start you on this because you have to get labs done 1 or 2 times a week. Long story, Then My DR. left UCSD, he was the chief hepatologist, also the head of the Liver transplant.Well the Dr. that took his cases, I have seen him twice in the last year, is very against someone being on methadone maintance, I have been for over 25yrs..They just don't do any thing, come back in 2 or 3 months, I'm sick of it!!!!!!!! He doesn't care. Has ANYONE ran into this? My first Dr. said that didn't matter as long as I was stable!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't know what to do !! I'm running out of steam, I just keep getting sicker and sicker HELP!!!!!!!!!

The AASLD practice guidelines recommend to physicians that:

“Treatment of HCV infection can be considered for persons even if they currently use illicit drugs or who are on a methadone maintenance program, provided that they wish to take HCV treatment and are able and willing to close monitoring and practice contraception”.

http://www.aasld.org/practiceguidelines/Practice%20Guideline%20Archive/Diagnosis,%20Management%20and%20Treatment%20of%20Hepatitis%20C.pdf

(see Pgs 1361,1362)

You might print this document out, read and understand it’s contents, then ask the doctor what part of it he/she disagrees with. It might open up a dialogue that you can both work with.

Aside from that, you’ll need to find another doc that is willing to treat you, and it sounds as though you don’t have time on your side at the moment. I’d press the current doc for action first, but it doesn’t hurt to scout around for a back up.

Good luck--

Hopefully I will get something resolved, first by having my new DR., talk to the DR. at the methadone clinic, I am going down on my dose because I want to NOT because my liver dr. wants me to!!!!! I do believe the Dr. at the methadone clinic, is in my coner, he talked very highly about me to the Transplant cordinator. I did try to find another Dr., who was an A Hole, he told me the only Dr. in San Diego who could and would treat me was my first Dr., and how STUPID I was to dump him, MY wife told him in a very stern reply WE DID NOT DUMP HIM!!!!!!!!!!!! The ins. co. made us find another Dr., which I made sure ALL my test results for the last year and a half at that time were sent to his office 2 weeks BEFORE my appt., if he had bothered to read them he could have called me and cancelled the appt. but I guess thats to much to ask. SO I called my case manger (from my ins. co.) and she was like oh my. I then called my transplant coordinator at UCSD, she talked to my ins. case manger and got it worked out, I could use the lab at UCSD so she made me an appt. for 2 weeks away, July 20, 09, well by then my GREAT Dr. was gone and here was the new one, GREAT and my transplant coordinator is the same one, who agreed with my first Dr. about the methadone, but now kinda agrees with the new one.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANKS to everyone who replied!!!!
And To Bill1954, I will print that out and go from there!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANKS AGAIN

http://www.hepatitis-central.com/hcv/drs/ca/sandiego.html

That is a link to hep c specialists in san diego. Of course there must be many more, but maybe you could call some of them and ask if they will treat you.

Good luck-Dave

Maybe ask for a different Dr at uc.  They obviously have different opinions on the subject since your previous doc was willing to treat you. Maybe you can ask the coordinator of the department to help you.

Ditto what Bill said!!!!!!!!!

Surely in your area there are a few hepatologists. Maybe one in a private practice that needs his patients to pay his bills would be more empathetic than yours since the University is footing their bills.
