Hepatitis C and alcohol

In 2007 my fiances father was diagnosed with Hep C.  He more than likely got the virus over 20 years ago by a home tattoo. After he found out he had it he never went to the Dr. again so he doesn't know what stage he is in or any other information about it. However he is a very heavy drinker and has been for about 28 years now along with narcotic drug abuse.Lately it seems like when he drinks it doesn't take much and he is plastered, he is very tired all the time and has yellowing of the skin. How long can someone go on like this before they die? I am not wishing ill fate on someone but I refuse to get him help by taking him to the doctor if he refuses to stop his drug and alcohol abuse. So with that said can someone tell me the life expectancy on someone like this so we know if we should be planning a funeral anytime soon.

By refusing him the right to seek medical care is is enabling him lean on her. This problem needs to be dealt with outside of the family.

My 4 cents on this situation, esp. the part about trying to get an alcoholic to take care of himself:

1)  Codependent no more.

2) Al Anon.

3)  if he doesn't change his ways he's likely short for this Earth.  It's a free country.

4)  Alcoholism is at root a disease of selfishness

the yellow skin could be jaundice but the only way to know if for him to go to the doctor.  Even if he will not stop drinking, he needs - and you need - to know what can be done for comfort.  I wish you luck on this hard road

Nobody has a crystal ball that can tell us the future.

This man needs to see a doctor who may be able to help him realize the truth of his situation.
This isn't for you to decide. Nor is it your place to judge him.

If you've been addicted to a substance for this long you need a lot of help to change, and often that help needs to come from outside the family.

Any compassionate person would bring this man to a doctor. Do the right thing. Call a doctor for him NOW !
