First of all, your husband needs a definite diagnosis of his condition. Whether is associated with treatment or not, he needs to be diagnosed. If the doctors you go to tell you they don't have an answer, don't stop with this. Keep looking. Go for a second opinion. Go to a large academic medical center where they see a lot of patients with very rare disorders and have better abilities to determine what is wrong. You need to be an advocate for your husband. Very often doctors need some pushing and prodding. And don't stop until they find out exactly what is going on.
I hope that you find the answer and that he feels better soon.
Actually, if you read the package inserts that came with the meds they do warn of some pretty bad side effects. I'm taking Effexor too and I know I will have to taper it off when I quit. The stuff works on your brain chemistry and if you stop all at once that chemistry will get all out or whack.
Your husband only did the treatment for 4 months? Does he still have the virus? You say he was fine during the treatment so I wonder why he stopped so early... just curious.
I have read about these drugs causing autoimmune problems so you may want to find a doctor that specializes in that area.

If he is still working it may get worse and he may want to start to the disability route.
It is a long process and a difficult one. I recommend going thru an attorney or specialist. I went thru the local welfare office as I was already getting medicaid... The specialist can only get a certain amount even if he works a thousand hours and five years for you. He cant get a penny over that amount and it is well worth that persons expertise.
Your husband should see as many specialist in the medical side as he thinks he needs. The one thing my guy told me was this: When the doc asks you how you are feeling tell him the truth! It isnt a social visit so dont say Fine thank you! Keep detailed notes and read off the notes. Tell the doc that on Friday nite I had a shooting pain running up... and then for three hours another pain... etc.
I think you get the idea.
best of luck with this terrible disease and "cure",
frank
