My husband had a partial hepatectomy last year, but it was necessary because he had a large tumor (12cm), a cancer caused by Hep C. If it were not for the fact that his cancer was life-threatening, such serious surgery would never have been recommended.
Hepatectomy is NOT generally performed just because a patient has HCV, or even for liver "damage" removal -- in fact, hepatectomy can be very dangerous if a patient has cirrhosis.
If your fiance's doctors are recommending resection, it should be with a very specific diagnosis/cure in mind. It would be most important to know exactly what kind of liver "damage" the docs are referring to, and why they think it would benefit your fiance to have hepatectomy. In my opinion, it is not an operation to be undertaken lightly, but it can be a life-saving measure in the appropriate circumstances.
Hope that helps.
