Nexium

Is Nexium ok to take if you have Hep C? This is an Rx for 40 mg. I know we need to be extremely careful with meds. If not Nexium, which acid-reflux med is ok to use? Thanks!

I started taking prevacid for gerd about two months ago, now on tx. none of the doctors or trial coordinators have any problem with it. It definitely helps the gerd, although Id like to be free of it eventually.

Well, with advanced liver disease and decompensated cirrhosis no medication is safe, because liver can not process and detoxify what comes through it anymore. Pretty much every medication has to be given in a reduced dose in this situation.

Nexium is pretty harmless drug with very few negative side effects. Thousands of hepatitis C patients take it every day to control heartburn. Just having hepatitis C is not a contraindication for using Nexium.

I would start with 20 mg and see how it works.

"Before taking this medication, tell your doctor if you have ever had any type of liver disease. You may not be able to use Nexium, or you may need a dosage adjustment or special tests during treatment."

Hepatic Insufficiency

"The steady state pharmacokinetics of esomeprazole obtained after administration of 40 mg once daily to 4 patients each with mild (Child Pugh A), moderate (Child Pugh Class B), and severe (Child Pugh Class C) liver insufficiency were compared to those obtained in 36 male and female GERD patients with normal liver function. In patients with mild and moderate hepatic insufficiency, the AUCs were within the range that could be expected in patients with normal liver function. In patients with severe hepatic insufficiency the AUCs were 2 to 3 times higher than in the patients with normal liver function. No dosage adjustment is recommended for patients with mild to moderate hepatic insufficiency (Child Pugh Classes A and B)."

"However, in patients with severe hepatic insufficiency (Child Pugh Class C) a dose of 20 mg once daily should not be exceeded."

There should be more information on the label that came with the med.
