As mentioned, alcohol poisoning alone can cause cirrhosis.
I wonder if he also was taking tylenol.
Tylenol and alcohol are a bad combination for anyone's liver.
Hepatitis means swelling of the liver. The causes are different. It could be by a virus A B or C but can also be from alcohol induced and the effect that is has on the liver. If he stops drinking when he is still young He could regenerate his liver. If he has a virus and drinks thats another situation. People die from acute alcohol poisoning when they are on a bing and the liver cant filter the amount of alcohol going through the liver at the same time.. So he could have cirrohiss of the liver from alcohol intake and not any of the virus.
"Hepatitis" means swelling and inflammation of the liver.
I am sorry to hear about your son.
"Hepatitis" is just a general term that mean swelling and inflammation of the liver. There are many things that can cause "hepatitis of the liver".
* Infections from viruses (such as hepatitis A, B, or C), bacteria, or parasites
* Liver damage from alcohol, poisonous mushrooms, or other toxins
* Immune cells in the body attacking the liver and causing autoimmune hepatitis
* Medications, such as an overdose of aspirin or acetaminophen, which can destroy the liver.
"Doctor told him his liver is SHOT!"
This doesn't really help as liver disease is staged 1-4 which tells how advanced it is. It is a number. You need the stage to know how damaged his liver really is.
For your son at the age of 25 to have such extensive liver disease needs to be looked into. He should go to a large hospital near you where they have hepatologists (experts in liver disease) that are experienced in diagnosing and managing advanced liver disease. Emergency doctors are good at saving lives but they are not experts in liver disease. As you may or may not know a person can not live without a functioning liver. Unless he gets help and stops drinking his prognosis is not good.
Get a referral from the hospital your son is in to see a gastroenterologist or hepatologist.
The Cleveland Clinic has one of the best liver disease clinics in the world.

Liver disease is a very complex subject and it will take time to understand exactly what is happening. In the meantime your son must not drink alcohol again as alcohol is toxic to the liver and can cause him to experience the same condition that brought him to the ICU or worse.
Good luck to you.
Hector
It may just be caused by the abuse of alcohol
