Epsom Salt Bath for Muscle Ache and to Rest??

Has anyone read anything +/- about the use of Epsom salt baths to relieve muscle strain and to relax before bed?  My wife tried some for tendonitis the other night and said she slept well too.  The magnesium is supposed to help flush toxins?? not sure if it's okay??

I love epsom salts. I'm an athlete and get sore all the time. Now I'm just stiff and sore from treatment, not exercise. Add two capfuls of heavy mineral oil (you can get it at walgreens) and it will moisturize your skin really nice.

I use at least 2 cups in a 1/2 full tub (not sure, but that may be around 10 gal).  It doesn't hurt to use more.  The Epsom salts make the water just a little slippery, so be careful getting out of the tub!

Since I'm on tx and my skin is drier than usual, I do have to be careful with water temperature.  My baths aren't as hot as they used to be!    I try to really submerge all of me in the tub, and if I have any sore muscles I make sure to find a way to soak that area especially.  I also use one of those inflatable bath pillows so I can be comfortable as long as the water is warm!!  Low lighting, a little scent...home spa treatment!!

It sounds great. The Epsom bath does so many good things and is inexpensive too. Thanks for the input.

How much is enough to be used in 10gal bath water?

Amazed that more HepC folk to not say more about the detoxifying effect. I figure any safe stuff for folk who cam not it cured is good to do.

I am a big proponent of Epsom Salts baths.  I like to add a couple of drops of my favorite essential oils to the bath for the aromatherapy effect.  Listed below is a website for information about Epsom Salts (Magnesium sulfate) and here is something I copied from it:

     "Studies show these benefits from the major components of Epsom Salt may:

     Magnesium:

         * Ease stress and improves sleep and concentration
         * Help muscles and nerves function properly
         * Regulate activity of 325+ enzymes
         * Help prevent artery hardening and blood clots
         * Make insulin more effective
         * Reduce inflammation to relieve pain and muscle cramps
         * Improve oxygen use

     Sulfates:

         * Flush toxins
         * Improve absorption of nutrients
         * Help form joint proteins, brain tissue and mucin proteins
         * Help prevent or ease migraine headaches"

Some studies have been done as to the way the body absorbs MgSO4 through the skin.  In obstetrical nursing, MgSO4 is given in IV form to treat preeclampsia and hypertension related to pregnancy.  It has the effect of relaxing smooth muscle and is very potent in IV form, even decreasing the deep tendon reflexes.  Taken in the bath, it is very safe.

Here is the website if you'd like to learn more about Epsom salts:

I used to take them on a regular basis. They are detoxifying and really relaxing. Just be sure that you drink extra much water, as they can induce a lot of sweating.

I love Epsom salts. Haven't done an Epsom salt bath in eons. I'm not sure why it wouldn't be okay.
