UND at Week 8!

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to share some great news, and  also thought this may be encouraging to people who have been told they have less chance of SVR because of certain factors. My husband is txing with Pegasus and Riba- he's a Geno 1a with probable cirrhosis. He also is slightly overweight, over 50 year old, and has diabetes- all negative predictors of SVR. He started tx with a viral load of 2.8 million- by week 4 it was down to 1200. By week 8, he was UND. His NP is very encouraged by this, and I'm greatly relieved because this has been a rough month for him. He's really anemic and the Procrit hasn't started kickin' in yet. He also had an AFP-L3 test that came back elevated. AFP-L3 is an element of the total AFP test, and is supposed to stay under 10% of the total AFP. Rick's was elevated to 28%, so he had to have an MRI to be sure he didn't have HCC. That was stressful of course, but the results of the MRI came back perfectly fine.

Just wanted to share some happy news for a change. And more importantly, I want to thank the people who have been there to answer my questions and help me get through the waiting and worrying. You are such a blessing, and I'm so grateful to all of you.

It is unfortunate that he wasn't clear at 4 weeks - most of us hope we are - but great that he was clear at 8 weeks ---- IF IT WAS A SENSITIVE TEST.
What was the name of the test and how sensitive was it?

This is the story for many of us (self included).  The second the cirrhosis (or any of the other negative predictor labels) goes onto a patient's chart, it feels like a veil of doom has been dropped over everything.  Leaves the patient in a state of dread and lowers the expectations of the doctor.  I can just feel the excitement and sense of triumph in your post now that he has overcome the predictors so very well!  Congratulations to you both.

We tend to forget that for every study where they say 50(or whatever!)% of some particular group failed to respond, there were 50% who responded just fine.  I guess we need to learn the negative preditors when we get into TX, but it sure does add to the anxiety of waiting for that first UD.

Great news! I am so happy for you and your husband! Is he getting weight based riba? Week 8 sounds really good to me, considering he has probable cirrhosis.

Keep at it!
