I went through 48 weeks of treatmnt, my doctor prescrbed morphine and oxycodone, these were the least harmful, I also have cirhosis.
Best of luck
My understanding is that cirrhotics should try to keep their acetaminophen (Tylenol) to 1000 mg a day or less. This means keeping track of any other pain meds he might take, like Vicodin or Tylenol PM, that contain acetaminophen.
Whether or not he can take NSAIDs (aspirin, ibuprofen, naprosyn) and how much he can take will depend on whether he has varices or any other gastric problems.
He really needs a good doctor to examine him and advise him on these isues.
Sorry to hear of your dilemma. That is really a tough question and if I gave you the medication that works best for me, it may not be good for your husband. Besides I am not cirrhotic, I suggest that you and your husband talk to your doctor and if you advocate for yourself you will most likely get something. The link below is a question similiar to yours that was posted to the expert forum. Part of the problem a doctor has is the most effective pain medications are also very toxic, so harm vs benefits needs to be weighed carefully. good luck
