I read your other post and I was gonna respond to that when I saw this one. Hospice and doctors are concerned in providing comfort for the terminally ill patient. I've actually worked with Hospice ppl and they are very nice caring ppl. There aren't any specific guidelines that I know about, however here is some information that you can check out. Also if you google anything, you will get alot of hits, not all the time but most of the time. I can not tell you anything about your relationship with that man, as I don't know either one of you. All I can say is that I was in your same position at one time and you can't call em' right all of the time. Some addicts just don't want recovery, I'm glad I did.
The use of morphine derivitive drugs has always been a controversial subject, between doctors, both pro and con. God Bless

I really don't know about any "guidelines" for treating people who are addicts of some sort. I only have heard that doctors will not tend to prescribe treatment medication for uncontrolled addicts because:
1. The treatment is hard enough on the body as it is without the added stress of additional drug toxicity.
2. The treatment is much less effective for an active alcoholic. (presumably for other types of drug abusers as well though I am not entirely certain on this)
3. The treatment is expensive (40-60 thousand give or take) and the tendency is for insurance companies and health care agencies to not waste such money on someone who is killing them self already - or so I have heard.
But the bottom line in my eyes , alaja, is that if your doctor wants the best information on treatment guidelines then she should be asking her own peers and doing her own research. Not asking us.
