If all this is new to you then I am in the exact same boat.

The first time I treated I got hyperthyroid but I was asymptomatic so it was no big deal. This time around my 8-weeks labs revealed thyroid level of 17.49. I tested again a week later and it was 9 something and that is when I started 50 mcg Synthroid. Or rather Generic Levothyroxine. I just glanced at my 12 week labs (taken on 06 April 2012)  and the Thyroid panel showed (LabCorp Reference Intervals):

TSH  8.370  uIU/mL (0.450-4.500 )
Thyroxine (T4)  11.5  ug/dL  (4.5-12.0 )
T3 Uptake
T3 Uptake  24 %  (24-39 )
Free Thyroxine Index  2.8   (1.2-4.9 )

My guess is the PA will instruct me to increase my dose by another 50 mcg.

I read about Intererferon-Induced Hypothyroidism and how it is supposed to resolve itself after you stop taking the meds however so far I have yet to read about anyone whose thyroid function returned to normal after treating.  I realize that is anecdotal so you may want to take that with a grain of salt.

As far as the symptoms I lost the outer 1/3 of my eyebrows and I am usually cold but with all the other meds we take it is difficult to pinpoint any particular side to my thyroid function. I mean my Hgb is 10.2 so yeah, I feel sluggish. Oh, and losing hair by the glob.

Anyway, how are you feeling about all this? Did you know much about thyroid function before your levels became elevated?

Were you feeling any of the symptoms of Hypothyroid before you found out your levels?

Do you feel any better or different now that you are on Thyroid Meds?

I have a feeling it may take a couple of weeks to get the right dose so be prepared for more labs than usual for a couple of weeks!

I was on thyroid meds, the last time around on tx, that was a year ago, when I was on tx I was on 100mcg, after they reduced it to 25, my doctor just called they are going to increase it to 88mcg. I hope I will start feeling better, my WBC was 9.5, so that does,nt help. I have put 20 pounds on in 8 weeks, that is really discouaging, hopfully with the increase I will level out , thank you for all your inputs, truely appreciated thanks Mary ann

The treatment for HCV ,,more specifically the Interferon can cause the thyroid gland to overwork somewhat  for many while in the beginning stages of tx. ..therefore becoming "hyperthyroid"  then as the gland continues to overwork very often the end result is damage done to the gland and the thyroid underperforms and you become "hypothyroid "

The normal ref. range used by most doctors today is  .3 to 3. Anything over this is considered "hypo"

8.04 would be considered having moderate hypothyroidism  and can  most often be treated successfully with Synthroid as the above posters have mentioned.

Debra is correct when she mentions frequent testing should be done (approx. once a month ) and changing dose accordingly until the reading is in the proper ref. range.

If you have been on  50 mcg. for a month and your thyroid reading is still at 8 you are not getting enough and your doctor would increase your dose.

This is usually a life long condition ,however very well maintained with the proper dosing of synthroid  once per day as nygirl mentions and there are usually no side effects .

It is very important to get the level correct   as "hypothyroidism can cause a whole array of symptoms...

Hope that help ..

Oh Yes, my Thyroid was all over the place with treatment. I started using 88MCG now taking 200MCG after the last 6 months. My Doc is testing me monthly to ensure I'm taking the correct MCG. My Doctor told me that the treatment drugs impact the way the Thyroid meds are working.

Now that I have complted treatment - The doctor told me the dose is going to be reduced.

keep them testing you to make sure your on the right does. I was so sick from taking the wrong dose at the start - I was thinking it was the TX meds but it was my Thyroid giving me most of the side effects.

Take care - Deb

Ouch you are hypo aren't you? Mine went to 0.0 then it shot up to 6.2 in just a few weeks. I've been on .88mcg since during treatment. With an 8.04 you might be on the stuff for the rest of your life too. It could change after tx but you'd have to go off the Synth and take your chances. I had about another 48 weeks of treatment when my thyroid went bonkers...so I really had no chance.
