Hep C and pain meds

Can I continue to take my pain meds (Dilaudid & MSContin) while taking new treatment for Hepatitis C?

Rather be on opiates then nsaids any day. I'm highly allergic to Tylenol too. My Liver specialist told me its the lesser of evils for anyone with liver issues. Nsaids are to be considered poison.

Very interesting article but a little dated at 2005. I had thought that narcotics without acetaminophen added were the safest drugs for hep c patients needing strong pain meds. Was there any follow up on this study?

I don't know the answer to your question and like the others said you may want to talk to the doctor about this issue.  With that said, I can tell you that opiate drugs replicate the HepC virus per the link below and that's been common knowledge for a long time.  good luck!!

I've been taking valium for years and I would get too stressed out and wouldn't be able to sleep without it. It's a pretty safe, old school benzo and I usually only take it as needed at night. It looks like it is safe with Harvoni. If I get my tx I will probably never need tylenol but it looks like small doses would be OK. I'll ask the doc but to tell the truth, you folks here know more! And I'm not changing docs now and starting over! Dixielady, sorry about the hi-jack.

I have been taking morphine for a good 7 yrs now ,like some others say its addictive if you are that kind of person. And to say take nothing is easier said then done. I would be completely bed ridden if I did that, and screaming to no end. Severe chronic people take there meds cause they have no choice not because they want too.

I had no problem with Valium.  Nor did I become addicted.  I took Valium during treatment.  Never took it before and never felt a need to take Valium
again.  Not everyone gets addicted to prescription drugs.  Valium worked really well.

Here is some links to tylenol by others......

Valium is highly addictive and has severe life threatening withdrawals if used long enough. Avoid it. Best to take nothing and stick it out. Tylenol is bad for the liver so they suggest aleve but only when desperate. If possible take nothing during treatment. All pills are hard on the liver.

You asked about Tylenol (acetaminophen).  I said I guess not.   Sorry.....   Tylenol is one of the few you can take on Hepatitis C treatment as long as it's less than 2000 mg a day.   Sorry... should have said "most likely you can take acetaminophen. " Again....ask the doctor.

Hope this helps

Per the above site.  There is no interaction with Valium and Harvoni .  You can check drugs on that site to see if there is an interaction.  As always, it says contact your doctor because all interactions may not be known.

Looking forward to hearing about your SVR

Hey Carl.  There appears to be many drugs that interact with Harvoni.  Sounds complicated.  You might want to look at the below link.  As always,
run it past your doctor.  But at least you can take a look.

Each of the new drugs have specific medications that are contraindicated. Your doctor will have a list of what those drugs are and what the impact on treatment will be. For example, I take amlodipine for blood pressure. I was on ViekiraPak and they followed me closely. One of the drugs(ritonavir) boosted the amlodipine and my dose of bp meds had to be cut in half. My point in telling you this is please do not count on that type of information on a discussion board. It would be a shame if you got wrong info and possibly took something that interfered with your treatment working or worse, made you very ill. Please ask your doctor. There are no docs here.

My doctor gave me a prescription of Valium while on Incivek treatment.  I don't know about the acetaminophen...but I would guess not.   Run it past your doctor.   FYI:  The prescription for Valium was my doctors idea.   I guess one doctor saw the sides.  I don't think I would have ever sleep without it on treatment without it.

Best to you

If I can jump in here, is there any indication that I cannot take valium if I start on Harvoni? How about small doses of acetaminophen?

I take morphine sulfate and oxycodone everyday if not would be in severe pain 24/7. I took all thru my treatment , I was on trial of sofosbuvir /gs-5816, took my last pill Jan 22. I was undetected at wk 4 and still am. The really bad stuff are the nsaids and Tylenol, I would surely check with your Drs. make sure you tell them every blessed med that goes in your system.

That is a question for your doctor.  These medications are way to new.  Its important that you inform your doctor of all medication you are taking.  Better
safe than sorry.

Best to you

Hi and welcome to the Forum!

I do not know the answer to your question, just wanted to say that, if you don't already know what medication you will be on (are on?), when you go to the Dr to discuss the proper treatment for your genotype, be sure and take a COMPLETE list of all your medications - prescription, over-the-counter, and 'sometimes' meds, so the doctor can answer that question.

If you know your genotype and possibly the med(s) the Dr plans to use, then let us know and those who are more familiar with drug interactions may be able to give you an answer.

Good luck and good treating!
