What does biopsy mean?

Just got back my biopsy results. Can anyone help me understand them? Am writing word for word from biopsy. Chronic HepC moderate activity grade 3 and evidence of early bridging fibrosis stage 3 Moderate steatosis. The presence of moderate steatosis and significant pericellular fibrosis suggests underlying steatohepatitis as well. Liver shows distortion of normal structure secondsecondary to fibrosis confirmconfirmed by trichrome stain which is focally bridging. There is also considerable pericellular fibrosis. This is lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate within portal areas as well as throughout the lobules.This is associated with cell necrosis.There is moderate steotosis. A reticulum stain shows changes similar to the trichrome  and without evidence of nodular regeneration. APAS with diastase is unremarkable and an iRon stain shows no significant stainable iron.

Here is a link to an in depth page on HCV and fibrosis progression, it's kinda of a hard read but it helped me to understand just where I stood as far as liver damage I had or still have (stage 3 also)

Thanks guys! I started Harvoni 2 weeks ago. I'm still a little unclear as to the damage I have already done to the liver.

2096: Hi and welcome to the Forum.  You have come to. great place for information, support, advice, understanding, etc.  H'guy gave you an excellent explanation and good advisce.  Couldn't have said it better!

I, too, suggest that you proceed with treatment so as not to progress to cirrhosis!  The liver can regenerate itself, once rid of the virus, and with healthy eating, drinking lots of water and no alcohol, and exercise.  Even a grade or stage better helps!  It does not happen overnight, but over time.  We ave had people on here report moving several stages/grades over a period of from 2 - 8 years, after getting rid of the hepc and using the above guidelines.

Even if it did not improve, just not getting worse would be a big win!  And, as I said, it can be better!

Hrsepwrguy:  Excellent advise, as usual and thanks for the site!  Hope all is well with you.

Blessing, All,

Pat

Metavir

The Metavir scoring system was specially designed for patients with hepatitis C.  The scoring consists of using a grading and a staging system. The grade gives an indication of the activity or amount of inflammation and the stage represents the amount of fibrosis or scarring.
The grade is assigned a number based on the degree of inflammation, which is usually scored from 0-4 with 0 being no activity and 3 or 4 considered severe activity.  The amount of inflammation is important because it is considered a precursor to fibrosis.

The fibrosis score is also assigned a number from 0-4
0 = no scarring
1 = minimal scarring
2 = scarring has occurred and extends outside the areas in the liver that contains blood vessels
3=bridging fibrosis is spreading and connecting to other areas that contain fibrosis
4=cirrhosis or advanced scarring of the liver

You have a score of grade 3 stage 3, IMHO you should seek treatment for your HCV ASAP before you progress to stage 4 (cirrhosis)

Have a great day
