False positive herpes culture?

I had unprotected sex with a friend as a result of a night of drinking that got carried away.  About 8 days later, even though I had no symptoms, I decided to get a full STD blood test check.  The results were negative for everything, including HSV1 and HSV2.   About 6 weeks later I started having symptoms of red irritation on the head of my penis.  While I didn't see specific blisters , the area became very sore and so irritated that skin peeled off and there was a small amount of bleeding. I was aggressively treating it as a yeast infection which I have previously had several times in the past years.  I finally went to a clinic and the doc said it looked like herpes.  He prescribed valtrex and within a day or two the entire area was healed...no sores, no scabbing, no redness.  He did a culture while I was in the office which I got the results for 7 days later.  They said, "positive" for herpes simplex.  So in the mean time, I saw my family physician who ordered another blood test (Igg+Igm), which once again were both negative.  As a profilactic treatment he put me on valtrex once a day a told me to get the blood tests repeated in 2 - 3 months, which I did.  And once again they came back negative for HSV1 and HSV2.  This was now 6 months after my initial potential exposure and the serologic tests are still negative.  Is it possible that the original culture at the close nice was a false positive and I really did have a yeast or other infection?  Help please!

Thank you for your reply.  The clinic said that their culture method couldn't tell which type it was. Only that it came back positive.  That's why I have been getting the blood tests done. Is it possible that the valtrex is subduing my antibody formation?

Hi, false positve cultures are rare and almost always from a lab mix up and since youve tested negative at the correct window period, you might be one of those rare people who dont show up on blood tests. In cases as these it would be recommended to take the Western Blot blood or stop taking the meds and have a new sore swabbed again. What type did they say you have, hsv1 or hsv2?
