Herpes Immunoblot test.

Had unprotected oral (received on Aug 13) Symptoms lasted for 4 + months. Had HIV, syphilis, 3 gono/chlam tests, Hep C done...was diagnosed with NGU, and no antibiotic worked for the burning in urethra.

Was on Z-Pac 2grams, 400mg suprax, 1g daily x14 days Cipro, 200mg x14 days Doxy, 2 weeks of 1.5g of Flagyl and 4 pills of Difucan....over the 4 months. If anyone checks my previous posts its has been a giant pain dealing with this.

Well to update I have received my HSV 1 and 2 results. I had the test done 5 days shy of the 16 week mark. (exposure was august 13th, testing was Dec 8th).

Immunoblot IgG HSV1 - Negative.
Immunoblot IgG HSV2 - Negative.

Boy did this take the weight off my chest. What is the accuracy of this test? I think I found a post with Grace stating that its 92-98% accurate. Also I am assuming that testing a few days before the 4 month mark should not invalidate thhe results?
This taught me a lesson what  total lack of judgment and having the "little head" doing the thinking for the big head can get you into.

Any feedback would be welcome, thank you.

it's a good test and you have no reason to doubt your results.  your symptoms have never seemed related to herpes.

How accurate is the immunoblot test? By that I mean what is the confidence level of the results? I have no idea who made the test. this was done by Gamma Dyna Care labs or Public Health......both say the other does the testing.

I believe only herpeselect offers an immunoblot but I might be wrong.

You are correct, it is HerpesSelect that makes the immunoblot. Is it correct to assume that having the test done a few days before the 4 month mark should not invalidate the results?

It took me this long to convince the doc to get it done. I would like to avoid going through the hassle of getting a second test done even though this was neg for both  type 1 and 2.

as I already said, you have no reason to not believe your results.

Grace, I do apologize if I seem like a pest. Ive had an odd situation and would like your opinion. Started with irritation in the urethral area that had the supposed NGU infection previously (below the head bottom of penis) on Saturday, progressed to  bad nausea, back pain and itchy feeling, foreskin, tip of penis itchy, itchiness between my crotch - one scratch it goes away but same areas non stop. This all got worse through Sunday to Wednesday.- especially the nausea(felt as if I was gona puke and the feeling as if my urine is almost acidic (know its not just the feeling) any drip or after urination feels hot burning penile skin.

I had the same sensations twice or so before in the same exact progression in the last couple of months, the first time it lasted over a week, much more intense, developed 2 large zit type things on lower back on tail bone, tingled when touched, itchy as hell, fluid filled. They went away after a long time or I scratched them off...don't remember. now just the exact sensations, no zits yet. I know I was tested 15 weeks 2 day after exposure by Immunoblot (neg for both 1 and 2). Could I just be late in developing antibodies to HSV? Is that possible?

My GP will not do another HSV test, thinks its unnecessary. But 1 in 10 come back with false results. Im only worried about GHSV1.  The nausea is the worst, bad bad bad puke bad.

Last tidbit - My wife was diag with BV or Trich.......GP not sure and gave her Flagyl, I got the same and difucan. Could all the antibiotics (Cipro, Penicillin, Amoxicillin, flagyl, Z-Pac, Suprax, Doxy) give me a bad long lasting fungal infection that difucan failed to eradicate? Since symptoms come back every few months. Last time before now was begining of Dec.

first thing I thought while reading this update was fungal infection.  quite common with lots of antibiotic use.

follow up on things with your provider as needed.

time to get herpes off your brain.

lots of viruses going around right now - I wouldn't assume nausea is related to what's going on in between your legs. also when you have disrupted your flora in your gi tract with multiple antibiotics that can contribute too.

Yes, you can have fungal infection even in the anal area too.

Grace..you can beat me over the head now with a hammer.

The nausea comes and goes, often begins with the urethral symptoms and back pain/itching sensation (itching redness on anus too). Went jogging, for the first 5 -10 minutes I thought I would puke. The first ever episode (months ago) of this woke me up at night with the back and nausea symptoms. I don't know it this was related to my pills or something else.

GP says its nothing..............

Most, if not all, the antibiotics I took were on an empty stomach or with liquids, thought that would not dilute their effectivness. This includes 5g and 4.8g of Penicillin and Cloaxicillin x14 days I was supposed to take 2g not 5. Cipro 1g x14days was with Doxy200mg x14 days empty stomach too. Bad gas, SEVERE burning heatrburn, tingling in body were my general side effects. Tongue was coated white, thick white, hard to brush it off with toothbrush.
Only thing that helped (at least I think so) was Difucan. 4 150mg pills taken once a week...then everything came back.

The point that I think Im trying to make is that I ve read soooo many stories on MedHelp and the web with ppl not showing the "typical" HSV symptoms that I have a hard time getting over it, it freaks me out and I am starting to doubt the Immunoblot results even though they were at almost 16 weeks post exposure. I even want to get retested for Syphilis even though my test was 7.5 weeks post.

In a way I pray that it would be fungal. I am high on anxiety and at a loss............................

Grace,

I had, just out of my sheer anxiety a 6 month test done for HSV. It was a combined IGG.

It reads:

HSV Simplex Virus IgG IEA: Non-Reactive
Herpes Simplex Virus Interpretation: No Herpes Simplex Virus IgG antibodies detected.

Note: HSV Type specific serology not available through the Ontario Health Laboratories.

I realize the combined tests do not differentiate between type 1 or 2. just show a general result. Is it safe to assume this test did not pick up antibodies for both? How good are the combined tests??????

It was supposed to be a Typing test for 1 and 2 separately, but the lab screwed up and sent it to public health who only do combined tests.

I would just like to know if after the 15 week negative and then this combined negative test to trust my results?
This is my last post on this topic Grace, if you could just give me some insight.

they aren't the best tests but really you didn't need to repeat your herpes testing and it's negative. time to put herpes in your out box and stop thinking about it so much.

Grace,

I understand that these tests do not distinguish between type 1 or 2 IgG and that if positive there can be a false positive, they also cross react with other viruses. And if positive I would need to do a type specific test to find out which type it was.

Is this the reason that this is not the best test?

Just wondering....thank you.

they just aren't as accurate as the type specific tests are.

Should I trust the results still? Combined with the 15 week negative Immunoblot results.

What is their accuracy 80-90%?

Just curious.

trust the results. You are in the clear. Go enjoy life! I know it is easier said then done. Here I am testing negative and still am experiencing the post herpetic nueralgia symptoms... which I see there are many other who are experiencing the same. Most of them have tested positive. I guess for me it is a matter of time. I took an immunoblot at 15 weeks and that was negative as well. so maybe there is some hope. not so sure.

I also have tested negative via Herpeselect IgG and 2 Western Blots @ 6 months post exposure and I still experience symptoms every single day - everyone tells me to forget about HSV - I have seen 10 doctors (GP's, Urologists, Dermatologists, Infectious Disease Specialist).  Everyone says there is no way HSV is the problem.

I assume that the pathogen in question is something else. Soemthing that standard STD tests don't pick up. Even if its gone out of our system it could have done damage and maybe sensatized our nerves in that area to keepgiving symptoms even though the tests show negative for HSV.

I am convinced I have herpes and I am convinced it is HSV1 which even Anna Wald say there are people with lesions and who will test positive via a PCR but will not show on a western Blot. So go figure. There are people out there who just will not show on the test and with so many people that are a symptomatic and those who have no lesions but pain who really knows. Medicine is a practice not an exact science. There are probabilities and educated guesses. But there are always exceptions.

OttMar - I think your test are pretty conclusive. I just need a little more time and we will see.

Also did anyone here ever get tingling in their mouth I also kissed this person so I am feeling it orally and genitally.
