Herpes?

My wife and I have been together for over 8 years. She started to get what she thought was a rash about a week ago. We are trying to have a kid so she has begun to take vitamins and we used a condom, which we never do, since she stopped taking her birth control. So we origionaly thought that the rash was a reaction to the lubricant since that is the only thing that has changed recently. She went to the doctor today and he  said that it looks like herpes. I could tell you all day that we are now and have always been faithful but some readers might not believe it. ASSUMING that we are both faithful, what are the chances of her having herpes for 8 years and neither of us knowing? 8 years without any symptoms? I don't understand how this could happen and I am very worried. I'm too embarrased to ask my family and friends for advice. Please help if you can. Also could the bumps be from shaving?

Could either of you be infected for over 8 years and not know it ? indeed that can very well be the case. odds are neither of you have ever been tested to know your herpes status prior to this.

at this point wait for her test results to come back. Both of you following up with type specific herpes igg blood testing is also a good idea since you are hoping to start a family soon together - one less thing to worry about when pregnant!

let us know how her test results come back!

Rashs could be anything.  Did they do any testing?

It is possible to go several years without an HSV outbreak.  HSV-1 genitially is typically the cause at that point.

Ask us all your questions.  But I will give you some things to do.  Both of you should go get a HSV Igg blood test.  This will tell you who has what.  The answer will be accurate as long as there has been no other sexual encounters in the last 3 months.  While I understand you both have been faithful I am just throwing that out there as I would tell anyone.
