Is it even possible to get herpes in more than one location

I have some questions.... I am 53 yo male never had a symptom of herpes that was until two years ago and I have no idea if I am even infected but do realize something is not right. All encounters were male to female.

I had a one time partner that found out after we had engaged in a romantic kiss, i gave her hand to genital stimulation and I recieved oral sex from her that she was both HSV1 & HSV2 positive. she claimes she has never had an outbreak her entire life. About two days later I had some iritation in my uretha. I self medicated ( I know not a good idea) but still had discomfort and some skin irritation on the shaft of my penis, on my lip and I developed some kind of blister or lump on my finger the one I used to stimulate her. There was no protection used. I did not go to a doctor right away but the discomfort lasted about 4 weeks and then finally healed. In the area of my lip I have had a burning feeling on and off daily basically in the corner where my lip appeared to have some type of sore. The area on my left hand where the sore was is fine but about 7 months later developed two blisters on my forearm that were fluid filled. The area burned and the blistered healed in about 7-10 days. I continue to get genital discomfort mostly feels like it is burning. I finally saw the dr during routine physical and a couple of time when things did not feel right. I get a creepy crawly feeling in my chin below where I also had some strange rash. I attributed this to razor burn but now I am not so sure. I have a partner for the last 15 years who up until that one brief moment of weakness have been completely faithful. I had two test performed an IgG type specific around 11 weeks post exposure and I was also able to get my primary care to order a WB around 7 months post exposure. Both came back negative which was great. My partner for the last 15 years has recently developed sores near her anus. I continue not to feel well lip, arm and genital area and leg is very sensitive to clothes temp changes and burning sensations.

I am so confused. I believed the test that I was negative. I still feel terrible and now my partner of 15 years has these anal sores that she has never had before.

What can I do to figure out what is going on?

I see where they talk about PCR testing who does that and if there are no sores do they still swab looking for virus.

Will Dr's even do that?

I am very frustrated and I very concerned I actually may have herpes and transmitted this to my long terrm partner.

Also is there any chance I could have gotten herpes in more than one location?

pcr blood testing for herpes is a waste of time and money. herpes is not a blood borne infection so it won't show up on the pcr blood test for herpes.

thank you for your well written and thoughtful response. I have one last question which I may even post for the doctors but maybe the anser is here on this forum as well.

I was looking at all sorts of testing nad the IgG and WB are what everyone talks about. PCR swab testing seems to be even better then the serology. What is the DNA PCR testing on blood for herpes. It says it looks for the actual virus attach to the DNA by real-time PCR amplification of the HSV glycoprotein B gene. This was on the quest testign page their site specificlly looks at CSF fluid and cultured lesions. But it does say blood as well.

It looks like a company in MO called  Vircor does this testing. They test on every fluid imaginable, urine, blood  saliva. Is this a bogus test or is it for real.

The WB is accurate for HSV2 - it's HSV1 that can be missed 1 in 10 times. And yes, you could be that 1 in 10, as by your age about 80% of the adult population has oral HSV1 (the majority never having a cold sore).

Your only risk was for transmission from her oral HSV1 via oral sex, and a one time encounter is extremely low risk (I know, it took my partner 5 years of VERY frequent oral sex to transmit it to me). Symptoms for genital HSV1 are typically classic - numerous painful lesions that take 2-3 weeks to run their course, as well as mild flu-like symptoms.

As Grace stated, this is most likely something non-herpes related. Go with her advice as to being seen for symptoms as they occur.

Fissures are not related to herpes.

Yes as to your last question.

In a nutshell - if your testing shows negative for herpes, you can only believe that and move forward, and be seen for symptoms as there are many other things out there besides herpes.

thank you for the reply.... So even the WB is not that accurate. I was wondering about that. The study I saw where they do IgG and WB testing are on peopel who they know for sure have the virus based on a culture. I am really curious how many people show mild or no symptoms that don;t test positive...that would be very difficult if not impossible to knwo just because the testing is not that accurate.

I would think maybe a blood test or a swab test for my partner. She said she went to the doctor and they called it fissures you would think they would test it for something. Would you think I shouldhave another blood test. If it misses 1 in 10 is that on all test? repetitive test? Or does it just mean I will never test positive on any test?

The swabs look for the virus correct and the blood test look for antibodies?

Even the herpes WB still misses 1 out of every 10 hsv1 infections. that said, odds are you have something non-herpes causing all of this.

any provider can do pcr swabs for herpes.  t hey are the preferred way to test active symptoms for herpes.

at this point you and your partner both need to be seen and have full work ups done for your symptoms. No more self treating. no more ignoring symptoms. Every single time you have one of your symptoms reoccur, be seen promptly for a proper work up.
