HSV IgG equivocal but lesions started years ago?

Hi,

So I presented with genital lesions 2 years ago, got tested and everything was negative for HSV. I got a routine screen done a year later including HSV IgG which was still negative. I became symptomatic again 3 months after the screen and got tested, everything was negative again. And then symptomatic again 4 months after that so returned to the doctor and my IgG was equivocal. (I dont know if this is at all relevant but in my latest doctor visit where I got the equivocal result I was also diagnosed with a yeast infection)

I'm just wondering how this is possible if I was first symptomatic 2 years ago, I've been vaguely symptomatic since but always negative and now I'm showing a not positive or negative result? Considering the symptoms have been seen over years with previous negative results does that mean I could be HSV negative but another virus or something is causing the lesions?

Thanks you in advance for your help!!

It is possible. The test looks for antibodies not the actual virus. Some people do not make antibodies. It's not common but it happens. Now if it's hsv1 then the tests can miss up to 30% of infections. The best plan is have any new lesions swabbed and type specific tested.

I thought everyone create antibodies, it's just the HerpeSelect can't always pick it up for some reason? Maybe a WesternBlot should be done?
