Positive Culture/Negative test

Is it possible to have a positive culture and a negative bloodwork to diagnosis herpes? I have no external or internal blisters but have a yeast infection that was used as the culture to test for herpes.

I'm confused now, you said that you tested negative but you posted before:

He had sores in his anus. He had a positive culture.  We both tested a few months later.  Both blood tests were positive for hsv2.  Both blood tests were negative for hsv1.  This was my introduction to genital herpes.

Wow, usually I have heard that HSV1 is harder to detect by serology. Seems as though HSV2 can go the same route sometimes.

advice111:

What HerpeSelect test did you have? ELISA or Immunoblot. ELisa provides numerical values, IM just tells you POS or NEG.

I posted a few months ago on this site with the same question.  My partner gave me hsv2 also.  My partner did a culture which came back positive.  I did a herpesselect test which came back negative.  I knew my partner gave me hsv2 becuse my doctor told me so and also because I was a virgin and out of no where I got these sores.  With all that being said, I was determinied to keep testing until I got a positive test, because i knew what I had.  I tested once a month for 7 or 8 months all with negative results.  Planned parenthood uses the herpesselect blood test which is suposidly the best and most acurate test available.(something like 98%)  So lastly, I asked my primary dr to run a western blot on me and finally it came back positive.  I spoke with a nurse at planned parenthood who informed me that she dosent understand what is going on but she had a few people call and talk to her about the same experience.

have you had a new partner at all since the last time you were tested for herpes?

There is a small percentage of folks who won't test accurately on the igg blood tests. At this point hard to tell if that is the case with you or if you recently acquired the infection.

do you have a regular partner? if so, have they been tested for herpes yet?

I would ask your doctor what type of Hepres it was. Type 2 is known to be in the genitals. Type 1 is often oral herpes with coldsores. But both can be in either place. It is best to find out what type since type 2 has more re-occurances than type 1 per year.

Let me ask for clarification: You had  what was a yeast infection, that was cultured and they discovered HSV? I am assuming they specifically tested you for yeast and HSV or just one of them?

Have you ever had any HSV bloodwork or culture tests done before?

I got tested because I had an ordorless discharge and it turned out to be a yeast infection, Im 35 and have never had one by the way,so I asked to be tested. I would guess HSV 2 because my dr took samples from the yeast infection discharge.

It is possible. If you were infected less than 3-4 months ago your body may have not built up enough antibodies to be detected on the blood test.
Do you know what type of herpes you are positive for? HSV 1 or 2?

What made you get tested?
