High Blood Pressure Advice....

Ok this is my background.  Im 4 ft. 11 in and weigh 220, female.  In 2005 i was dianoised with high blood pressure, which in return made me have horrible anxiety.  Well in 2006 i found out i was pregnant and my high blood pressure went away...totally normal.  Now a few months ago I go to doc and he puts me back on blod pressure meds, which in return my anxiety has came back.  I currently take 5 mg. of lisinopril.  I have lost 17 pounds and st5ill working on getting some weight off.  So I guess my questions are:

Can my anxiety cause my BP too flucuate?
Should I be on medications or since its such a low dose try and lower it naturally?
What things can I do to lower my BP besides diet, exercise and weight loss?

Any additonal info would be appreciated!!  Thanks, the whole idea of high blood pressure kinda scares me!!  Im only 31.

Welcome and thanks for your question. Yes, anxiety can cause your BP to be elevated. Our BP is affected by many outside stimulus including stress and anxiety along with things like caffeine and other stimulants. The best way to reduce BP is to reduce the underlying causes. Try to get the stress out of your life, if you need help discuss it with your doctor.

Losing weight will help considerably. Before I started working out n 2005, I too had high BP and was on meds. I have since lost 80 pounds by exercising every day and now my doctor wants me off my BP meds as my resting BP has dropped from 140/90 to an average of 107/66 when I'm off my meds for a day or two so keep up the weight loss. Make sure you are working with your doctor on what exercise is appropriate for you. You may also want to look at the DASH diet which was designed by the NIH to help lower cholesterol, below is a link. Also below is a link that explains the role anxiety plays on BP.

I hope this helps!

Jon
