Question concerning being taken off of HCTZ and put on metaprolol

I have been on cozaar for 15 years.  4 years ago I was also placed on HCTZ, due to increasing BP. 7 weeks ago, after getting quarterly labs done, my PCP said my calcium was too high and took me off the HCTZ.  She also said my TSH levels were high and placed me on synthroid. Last week I had office visit and my BP was 150/90.  My doctor then put me on metaprolol.  I started getting headaches every day. My BP remained at 150 to 160 over 90 to 100. After an office visit today she ordered hydralazine be added to my growing list of meds. Someone ( a friend who is an RN) suggested it was rebound hyper tension due to stopping the HCTZ all at once and putting me on a beta blocker at the same time.  Has anyone ever gone through this.

Thank you. I had an appt with my cardiologist on Friday and he ordered yet another BP med.  Said if it hasn't gone down by Monday to call him.  I will be calling in the morning as my BP has remained around 150/90.  Thank you for your response.

HCTZ medicines dont normally cause rebound hypertension when stopped suddenly. Betablockers such metoprolol can cause it on the otherhand.

I would say that the HCTZ was doing a better job than metoprolol and as a result your blood pressure may have risen - leading to the headache you are now experiencing.
