strep or oral STD ??

I had intercourse and oral sex with my boyfriend of over five years a few weeks ago. About a week or so later I started having a sore throat and noticed a white patch on one of my tonsils, which has since disappeared. The sore throat is still there though. At the same time I started having gynecologic issues........post menopausal bleeding. My gynecologist did a uterine biopsy and I am waiting for the results. A day or two after the biopsy I started to have an uncomfortable/irritated/burning sensation in my vagina but no discharge.  It has subsided a lot but is still there a little bit. Also the bleeding stopped ten days after it started.  Could this be an STD? Or could I have strep throat and and completely separate vaginal problem? Maybe the biopsy caused the vaginal discomfort?

Yes that makes a lot of sense. Glad you don't have an infection. Sorry if you have to have a D and C.  I am peri-menopausal and also have fibroids too. It may become a problem for me too. I hope things go well for you. I'm glad you don't have cancer either. It is a scary thing. I didn't think that was the problem though.

Hello again.......today I had my sonogram and found out the results to my uterine biopsy.......negative for cancer. The sonogram showed that fibroids are the likely cause of my post menopausal bleeding. I told my doctor about the sore irritated feeling after my biopsy two weeks ago and he assured me I am fine. It is possible I will need to have a D and C. I am very relieved it's not cancer or an STD. Thank you so much for your expert advice and reasurrance. It was much appreciated.

Today I saw my GP and he did a strep test which came back negative. No swollen glands or fever. He said I have a post nasal drip going on and he prescribed a nasal spray. When he looked in my throat he said he didn't see anything which is a good sign I guess. So now I wait for my biopsy results from my gynecologist concerning the post menopausal bleeding and I am scheduled for the saline infused sonogram of my uterus on Thursday. At that time I tell my doctor about the discomfort I started to experience in my vagina after the biopsy was done. Just thought I'd give you an update. Thanks again for your advice.

Yes I think since your boy friend  has been ill it doesn't make sense that he would be having sex outside your relationship. Is the hysterosonogram like a uterine sonogram? If so it doesn't look for STD's. But I think looking at your recent history that you should get a strep test anyway even though you may be recovering from it. And, get a culture for the uterine and/or vaginal area. As far as they can get to the area where you had the biopsy. I think since the discomfort etc. started from that time forward it sounds more like it stems from that. Very often on here people have sexual experiences and blame that on the other symptoms they are having. Since I have a different view point I can look at the symptoms with a different eye so to speak. More often than not it is not due to the sexual activity. I am pretty sure the biopsy is causing either irritation or an infection. It is good you don't have a fever. Keep an eye on that. If you have any other questions later, let me know.
take care,

I never felt like I had a fever and I don't know about swollen lymph nodes. I suppose it's possible my boyfriend could be having sex with someone else, but he is recovering from very serious colon surgery so who knows.....anything is possible I suppose. I will be having a hysterosonogram this week to further investigate the post menopausal bleeding. I'm wondering if that can show if I have an infection or STD? I will go to my GP to get tested for strep. I'm a little relieved to hear you say it sounds less like an STD and more like strep or a throat infection. Thanks.......you are very helpful.

You are right it could be either one. Do you think he could be having sex with someone else? I would get tested just in case for gonorrhea (GC), chlamydia to start with. Do you have a fever or did you? Do you have swollen lymph nodes under the neck? You did have pus in the throat. That can be a sign of either a strep throat or a STD. So, it would still be good to get a throat culture as well, or at least a strep test. If you have no fever and no swollen lymph nodes in the throat it may not be a strep. But I think I would still get the test just to rule it out. If you are doing all these tests and suspect that you may have an STD then you can either get all the STD's  or do the two and then go back if these two are negative. The others' would be to check for Trichomonas, GC, Chlamydia, Mycoplasma genitalium, Ureaplasma urealyticum, Syphillus and HIV (4th generation test 17 days or more after exposure).

You could have irritation or an infection from the biopsy as well.

This is one of those things that is a bit complicated and needs some testing. I think it sounds less like an STD and more like a strep throat or some type of sore throat (if you have/or had no fever) and perhaps something to do with the gynecological procedure (whether irritation or infection). So I'm leaning towards you getting a strep test for the throat and a culture for the uterine/vaginal area. Perhaps the doctor will give you an antibiotic that will correct both. But I think testing and making sure the doctor takes a look at your throat and you tell them the same thing you told me will help them to decide what treatment to give you and which testing. But it is your health and you can request what you want as well.
hope this helps,
