pain in back/difficulty urinating

3 weeks ago my 26 year old son (diabetic) was having pain at his side and back (at kidney area). He went to the Dr. and they said he had kidney stones. After two weeks he did not pass the stones. He went to the emergency room this past Sunday with horrible pain and difficulty urinating. They finally have calmed him down with around the clock morphine. They have run 2 CT scans and a renal nuclear scan. Both shown no evidence of a blockage. The CT did shown that he had very, very small stones in his kidneys (2 in one, 3 in the other). The Dr. said this should not be the cause of his pain. The Dr. also said his prostate was slightly enlarged. All of his blood work was good and his urine clear. They still cannot determine what is causing his pain. They also dance around what is causing pain everytime he urinates, he has to push really hard and it is very painful for him. We have no answers and he continues to be in pain.

No he has not. That actually bothered me while he was in the hospital and that they did not suggest he see one. Thanks for the suggestion. I will have him see one. I worry that he has been such a diabetic for so long that his kidneys would be the first thing he would have trouble with.

The pain continued for 8 days at the hospital. The Dr.s (including a urologist) had no answers. They ended up inserting a catheter because he could no longer push out his urine. My son said that he felt a "pop" during the insertion. They removed the catheter after 24 hours and he was then able to urinate properly. However the pain at his kidney continued. We finally decided to transfer him to UVA hospital. UVA took away the morphine and dilaudid and began to give him toradol. Within 24 hrs. the pain began to subside. By yesterday it was completely gone. The Dr. at UVA still could not explain what went on with him except that since torado is an anti-inflamatory medicine that it was possible that is kidney was inflamed in some way. They also can not explain why he had such difficulty with urination. I suspect that he did indeed have some type of blockage even though the test did not show one. He is doing very well now. We hope this situation will not occur again.

What type of Dr is he seeing.  A urologist?  I have had stones .. they are very painful.  Sometimes after I"ve passed one the pain still remains badly for a few days .. but of course I'm not a doctor and he should be in close touch with his doctor.
