Help with Abdo Ultrasound Results

I have just got my results from my doctor on a liver ultrasound I had done this morning.  It states:

There are multiple (greater than 10) heterogeneous but otherwise well defined lesions in the liver of varying size.  The smaller lesions are less than 1.5cm but the largest is 12, 11.5,10cm.

The differential diagnosis could include multiple haemangiomata or multiple liver secondaries.

I am scared.  I am 33 years old, and I dont know what it means.  I have been ordered for urgent blood tests, and am booked in for a Triphasic CT Scan tomorrow.  I asked the doctor if I have reason to be concerned, and he said " to be honest, we have to rule out cancer".

I am petrified that this may be cancer, for that matter any illness is enough to scare me!

Any advice is greatfully appreciated!

I have had minimal pain for years, everynow and then I get a pain, but it never lasts, more like wind pain, which my doctor tells me would have been pain from it.

I went and saw a specialist yesterday, who believes I am suffering from hepatocellular adenomas.  I have had nuclear imaging done and have to get an MRI, and then I will go back in a couple of weeks (25th March) and we will know more.  My doctor is taking my scans to a confrence next week to discuss with other specialists, for  a few different opinions.

He thinks I will need surgery to remove it, but wont confirm until results are back.

What tests have you had done??

It is stressful when you first hear about the lesions, but dont stress until you have seen a doctor and had more tests!

Good luck!

Does anyone have any type of pain from these?  I have a low dull ache under my rib cage through to the back.  Though it was my gallbladder but its not, that's who they found the liver lesions.

Thank you

Congratulations!  I am glad you feel better now.  It is terrifying at first, I know.  Our secretary was told she could have her hemangioma's removed if she would like to, but so far as opted not to.  I think they can possibly do those types of operations through a laproscope.

As for your heavy menstrual bleeding, the one thing I do know is that hormones play a role in many of the benign liver lesions.  I do not believe, though, that your hemangioma's could in any way cause problems with your menses.  However your hormones may be out of whack and therefore could have had a part in your hemangioma's as well your heavy menstrual cycle.  I have had similar issues with large clots and then finding out about a liver lesion.  I think there is a lot of undiscovered connections between female hormones and their levels in the body.

Definitely keep me updated on whether you have surgery!  Good luck and I am very happy things are more settled for you now!  Oh, and good luck with finding another method of birth control...that may be the hardest part of this whole thing! ha ha  Take care!

Hi!!  Thanks for your concern.

It is definitely not cancer, which I am over the moon about!  They are Hemangioma's and I have at least 17 in the left lobe of my liver.

The largest one is the size above, and it is showing signs that it has partially ruptured, and it is so large because of the bleeding.

I have to go and see a specialist, but couldnt get an appointment Friday, have to try again tomorrow.  My doctor believe's they will probably operate because of this partial rupture, but it is up to the specialist.

He has taken me off the pill immediately, which creates another problem for me, as my other half is allergic to condoms, so we are a bit stuck!!  I will have to discuss the problem with the specialist to see if there is any other ideas!

I wont know any more until I have seen the specialist, so will keep you posted.

As you are a nurse you might be able to answer for me, to save me from asking my doctor another stupid question:

Could my heavy menstrual bleeding, including horrific large clotting, be because of this?  My other half was wondering if the blood could possibly be coming from the liver?  I dont know enough about the human body to know if this is possible?

Please dont laugh at my silly question, but if so, it makes a difference to me!

Thanks for your concern frichi!

Hemangioma's are very common as are other benign liver lesions.  I am a nurse and see a lot of it.  One of our secretaries has 13 hemangioma's on her liver.  She gets a rescan every year or so to see if they are changed.  They have to rule out cancer but try not to worry too much.  I have a benign liver lesion that has had me to the point of going nuts, so I do understand.  The Ct scan will be able to characterize these lesions with a high degree of certainty.  Take a deep breath and just know that many people have these things and understand.  Let us know the results of your scan, ok?  Oh, and don't spend all night researching it on the computer, that makes it worse!  I know, I did it.  :P

By the way.  I have not been ill, and been getting no pain.  I went to the doc's re abnormal menstrual bleeding, and he sent me for bloods which showed abnormal LFT.  Which then meant he sent me for the abdo ultrasound today.

I have spoken to my boyfriend, and my father, but cant bring myself to tell my mother!  I am scared, I cant stop crying, and I need more info before tomorrow.  I dont know if I can wait that long!
