Does an ERCP hurt?

Hi,

I had my gallbladder removed in 2002 and am still having recurrent bouts of severe abdominal pain. I am scheduled for an ERCP and sphincterotomy next week and I am wondering what the recovery from this procedure looks like. The doctor told me it was "a little uncomfortable" which in my experience tends to me, "This is gonna hurt."

Any thoughts from those of you who have had an ERCP?

Thanks.

Amanda

Thanks for the comments. I had the procedure and unfortunately was one of the lucky 5% who developed pancreatitis afterwards, so it wasn't exactly pain free. :)

I was grateful for your comments, however, because they kept me calm leading up to the procedure.

Had this done twice and no it doesn't hurt at all. Matter of fact you will feel 100 times better after.

You should not feel anything nor remember anything.  If you do start to feel anything you need to let the nurse know so they can give more medication or just wait a few mins for medication to take more effect.  Have had at least 5.  Hopefully they will be able to correct what ever is going on.
