Shorthand for Clostridium difficile, a particularly nasty bacterium that affects the intestinal tract and can be very difficult to get rid of. It can take over when the regular types of antibiotics wipe out all the 'good' bacteria that normally populate the gut.
I haven't gotten it but I have seen many people with who have. It can be very difficult to treat and can persist or relapse.
PS....I just drank my Dannon shot of probiotics. Two months of abx - no c. diff or yeast infections yet....fingers crossed.
My husband had C-Diff after antibiotics for pneumonia. Flagyl helped within 48hrs, but then a week later, he relapsed. This is rare, from what I read. My husband happens to be the lucky one. Once he relapsed, they put him on vancomycin, which is a somewhat dangerous antibiotic (as far as side effects). However, the vancomycin kicked it in about 24-48 hrs for good.
I can safely tell you -get some probiotics from the health food store, or it can be prescribed from your doc. If you can do neither - get probiotics thru yogurt or those Dannon immunity shots. They will help immensely! Don't delay...
I hope you feel better soon, it was aweful for my husband. Some people don't get as bad as he did, so hopefully you are one of them. Like I said, Flagyl should do the trick and only rarely does it not kill that bug.
