I am married and never had permanent BC done. I have an active sex life with alternative ways to orgasm but I would like to have penetrative sex without fear. I am 53 and want no more kids. I am scared I would be that 1 in a 1,000,000 who would get pg. I couldn't do a AB so I was thinking of Essure. My hubby has "medical fears" so he is unable to have a vasectomy. Does it seem stupid when I am so "old" and I am perimenopausal. I have skipped periods but no more that 3 months. I have all the other peri symptoms(I read here) but I have been like this for 3 -4 years. I have 2 semi regular periods and then skip ,have spotting etc...
Can anyone make any suggestions,or know of anyone in a similar situation and what they did. I also thought of an ablation but i am still scared I would get pg. At least with essure, you have follow up to check for tubal scarring and closure.
My situation is somewhat similar to your own. I'm 53, sexually active; and, up until 2 months ago, I had timely and consistent menstrual periods. And, like you, I am also virtually asymptomatic in regard to menopausal onset. The only change that I've noticed
is that my last 2 periods were slightly "wacky," in that, I'll have a day of barely noticeable spotting... then, nothing for about a week and a half... then, a regular period.
Anyway, not long ago, I asked my doctor out of curiosity what would be the odds or the likelihood of my ever getting pregnant.
He looked at me with a partial smile (I think that he was containing his laughter) and said, "... almost zero." But, as long as I menstruate that very slim possibility does exist. He also added that in order for a healthy and fit woman in my age group (over 50) to get pregnant she would probably have to undergo invitro fertilization... and even at that, the possibility of pregnancy would be a very long shot.
So, what he told me placed my state of fertility, or lack of it, into perspective... and, that pregnancy at my age is highly unlikely to occur.
But, I can understand why a doctor can't or won't commit because, as long as you're having some sort of period, pregnancy is not an impossibility.
And, it's true... taking the pill has its drawbacks; condom use breaks the "mood." So, my 48 year old partner went and had a vasectomy... what a relief!
