Period during menopause?

My last period was in late Nov/early Dec 2007.  I have had hot flashing and thought I was well through menopause.     However, yesterday I began spotting and today am having a full blown heavy period.  Does this happen or should I be concerned?

Hi - I am 46 and can sympathise as I too had what I thought was my very last period Nov '07 and to my surprise had a period only last month, some 9 months later and now just starting another!

I was rather thinking I'd reached the Menopause having waited that long and felt quite reassured that my symptoms had been slight as my hot flashes/night sweats had ceased recently and I had only been left with my 2 weekly migraines.

After feeling concerned at this I went to my Doctor and was reassured all was okay, but she said that if I had regular periods from now on it should be checked out (from what I've read on the internet it is to make sure that I haven't got any fibroids/cysts etc), so going on that advice I'm going to wait for a couple of months before going back.

Having done quite a bit of research on the internet regarding Menopausal symptoms though, it's reassuring to know that there are lots of us suffering like this!

Anyway if you still feel concerned it's probably best to seek advice just to get peace of mind.

Thanks,
Debbie

I am 50 years old and have not menstruated for almost four years until a couple of weeks ago.  It seemed like a regular period (from what I remember :)  with breast tenderness and lasted 4 days.  Can anyone shed some light on ovulation occurring 4 years later!?
I am having an ultrasound tomorrow.
Thanks,
Anne

The "rule" is you are not in menopause until you haven't had a period for one year.  It hasn't quite been a year for you.  However, it could also signify something to be looked into.  I think if you bleed for a while, you might want to have it checked out.  I went 2 years without a period and then suddenly had full blown pms ending with a period and now I'm not sure what to expect.  Life as a woman, full of surprises.
