Fioricet Addiction & Recovery

Need a Dr's advice,  I have been taking Fioricet with codeine for 15 years and am now up to a daily average of 6-8 pills per day and want to stop taking this medication completely. I know I am addicted to this med but I want to do things right the first time. What type of Dr. do I go to and/or what steps should I take to get off this med. I only have a few pills left and am getting kinda nervous. Thank you for your help!

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hi,
How are you?  Fioricet contains a combination of acetaminophen, butalbital, and caffeine and indicated as a pain reliever.  The component butalbital is a barbiturate and may be habit-forming: Tolerance, psychological dependence, and physical dependence may occur especially following prolonged use of high doses of barbiturates. It is best that you check with your doctor for proper management and  treatment of barbiturate dependence. Cautious and gradual withdrawal of the drug is usually done. There are a number of different withdrawal regimens such as gradually decreasing the daily dosage as tolerated by the patient. Take care and do keep us posted.

We're not docs here, but we are here for you. I would think you might get some good answers on the Addiction: Substance Abuse forum. They'd probably know a lot more than some of us do at how to go about detoxing the right way.

Good luck!
