cognitive side effects from topiramate

My 15 year old daughter was started on topiramate for migraines, 25mg at bedtime.  She has only taken 2 doses and is already complaining of feeling like she is in a "fog", is having trouble recalling names and certain words, and feels like her brain is moving very slowly.  Her pupils are also dilated.  Her doctor said that these are "normal" side effects and "should" go away in a few weeks.  For a straight A student, athlete and someone who is learning to drive, these side effects are seriously altering her way of life.  Do the cognitive side effects truly fade in a few weeks or tend to stay and worsen?

Hi I was also on this med, the generic of TOPAMAX...and yes it will cause those side effects for the first 2 weeks until her body adjusts...I also went to my Dr with concerns but said this is the effects they want as this med changes the morphology of the headache .....and I continued with it and deff saw a huge improvement.....

If she finds she needs something more then the naproxen....then deff give it a try when she has vacation time off from school..

Good luck to u both.

Thanks for your reply. We ended up stopping the topiramate. The side effects were not at all worth any benefit she may have gotten. She is also taking naproxen. Praying that will keep them away!

I was started on that about a year ago for my Migrains..
It only made them worse, if u read on thst its used for Seizures...
That may be y she feels like that..
I now take Naproxen, they work...
I've had these head aches since I was about 6yrs old.
My mother, brother, aunt, grandmother, n myself get them... I fear my 3yr old is getting them now..
She complains of head aches n squins her eyes n cries to pick up her head.
