Headaches while pregnant

I am 6 months pregnant and have been experiencing headaches for much of the time.  I usually have them 1-2 days per week and it is almost always on the right side of my head.  They make me sensitive to light and sound and I feel kind of cloudy.  They are so bad I have to usually leave work and lay down sometimes for days at a time.  My OB has scheduled me to see a Neurologist but I was hoping someone could tell me what these may be.  Thanks!

Hi ang61179, thanks for your note. Did you suffered from migraine headaches in the past? It is common for some women to get these migraines during pregnancy and it is probably hormone related. You need to try to avoid the known triggering factors like the sound, noise and stress. Blood pressure needs to be within normal range. It is better to be in shade or use of dark goggles outdoors is good. Acetaminophen is relatively safe; if your headaches are intolerable then you may take only this medicine as needed. Do update me after you consult your neurophysician and update your gynecologist. Take care.

Hi ang61179, how are you? Yes it is a good idea to consult a neurologist and keep updating on your regular follow up visits. It seems probably you are having vascular headaches - migraines and stress due to pregnancy, high sound, bright light and work might be triggers. Are there any associated symptoms like nausea, vomiting, giddiness, and blurred vision? Avoid working in congested place or outdoors. How are your blood pressure levels? You need to rest for at least 2 hours in daytime. Before considering any medication do consult your Gynecologist. Have nutritious food; drink plenty of fluids and adequate sleep. Regular short walks; stretches and warm bath might be helpful. Keep updating on your neurologist visit. Take care.
