Bladder Spasms...do they last forever once you have em???

Hi People!  Hope everyone is having a good day...the temperature here has gone from frigid to balmy here today so that is a great change!

Well I have a question that I am not sure has an answer.  My gp has diagnosed me with bladder spasms and has put me on Baclofen to ease the spasms hence easing the pain.  I had to lower my doseage to 3mg 3 times a day which is 1/4 the regular dose of 5mg/ tid. due to the fact that I couldn't stay awake on the regular dose.  I am still having quite a bit of pain.

My question is, do these bladder spasms ever just end or is this something I will have to just deal with until I see the urologist in April 2011?

Ok, I have a couple questions...should I call my Neuro and let him know that I am having this problem?  I know it could be related to my MS and I am wondering if I should consider this a symptom of my MS?

I let my GP know that I won't be getting in to see the urologist until April but nothing was said.  Would this be considered a "new" symptom of my MS?

I have also been finding that my urine is smelling sour the last week or so...no I don't pee in a cup or anything but it can be really strong and just can smell it when I stand up!  ewwwwww!!!!!  Is this a sign of a possible UTI?

I think Quix might be feeling frustrated with me and for that I am sorry my dear.  The health care situation here is just scary right now and going to ER will not solve anything for me.  It takes so long to get seen and I don't think anyone is getting any quality care right now.  I need someone that can take the time to figure out what the heck is going on.  I haven't been having a full feeling like I was in the beginning, it's just the pain...very similar to menstrual cramps.

I am feeling very out of sorts about this...any input would be appreciated!

Lots of crampy hugs,
Rena

Hi there,
I have bladder spasms and they seem to come and go like the rest of my symptoms, they can be caused by MS/TM but of cause other reasons should be investigated as well, it is easy to assume that every ailment we have is due to MS or neurological.

I take Vesicare which is like GOLD, very helpful for the painful spasms, they do seem to wax and wane.

Thinking of you, I would try to get into your urologist sooner.
Cheers,
Udkas

Thanks for your replies.  I have spoken to the urologists office and she said that she has a cancellation list but it's about a mile long so I don't think I will be getting in to see her any time soon.
I called my neuro's office and left a message but don't expect to hear from them until at least Monday...they are pretty slow.  So I guess I am stuck in the middle of going nowhere as usual.  I am feeling really frustrated but what can I do.  There is such an uproar over the ER waiting times and people wasting the services of ER it almost makes you afraid to go for fear of being shot for not being sick enough!  ha ha  I guess it will be a wait and see situation...I don't want to leave it too long as you said Lulu...hopefully the baclofen will start to work better and I get some relief for the weekend.  I guess I will increase the dose if I am not getting any relief...and just sleep my life away cause that is all I can do on this med. grrrrrr

Sorry to hear you are getting chilly weather now Lulu but I guess it's someone else's turn isn't it?  he he  We did have our fair share and we are having the Grey Cup Football game (sorta like your Rose Bowl) on Sunday so the masses are going to appreciate the warmer weather!  Wouldn't be me though sitting outside in this country on November 26th to watch a football game...I am gonna stay home nice and warm to watch it!
Have a good weekend!

Hugs,
Rena

Rena,

You know I'm not a doctor or even medically trained but from what you write here I would venture the strong guess that the spasms are related to the MS.  Bladder spasms can be pretty common and very painful.  You don't need to wait until April to see someone about this.  Call your doctor(s) and see what else can be offered if you aren't tolerating the baclofen.

There are reports of great success with Botox injections in the bladder to help - check that out as an option.

The change in your urine is definitely a reason to be calling ... and a brewing UTI could probably be complicating the bladder spasms ?? Again, just my guess about the connection but I am positive that changes in urine should be treated by the doctor.

Any chance that if you call the urologist about these problems they would get you in sooner?  If not, use the doctor that will see you that you are comfortable with.  Don't put it off, please.  I am the poster child of UTI's gone wild ... learn from my lessons and don't delay with this one.

I'm glad the weather has warmed - we've gone the other way and it is freezing here.

hugs, Lu

Ohhhh owwwwww doesn't sound like its been fun for you, I think the rule of thumb is if you have pain and changes in urine colour and or odor then its probably a UTI and should be something your gp can test and treat. You could contact the urologist and tell them whats happening now and if there is any chance an earlier appointment can be made, its worth trying. I think i'd not leave it too long, can't forget all the trouble UTI's can cause.

HUGS...............JJ
