Curious if anyone else experiences this?

While this really isn't a big deal, at least to me, I am curious if this is just something strange with me or not.

When I stand up some times it seems like I'm 8 feet tall. This only lasts for a minute or two before my height seems normal again. This might happen 2 or 3 times in one day and not have it happen again for months.  Oh and I'm only 5' 10" tall. I'm kind of thinking this might be some form of vertigo, but without the dizziness. I do get vertigo with the dizziness by the way as part of my MS.

GG,

No this is not a new symptom. It has been going for for a least a couple of years, but does not happen very often. It just happened that yesterday when I got up to come to my computer so I remembered to mention it. I have never remembered this when I have had doctor appointments so I have not asked my doctors about it.

JJ,

No it isn't that everything in my environment seems farther away. Walls, furniture, ceiling, objects on tables, everything seems to be the right distance from me. It is only the floor that is farther away than it should be. That is what makes this so strange to me.

I do have some intermittent problems with proprioception that happen with low light levels. If I'm in a dimly lit restaurant I will at times knock over glasses, miss my mouth when drinking and the like. I also will lose my balance when entering a store after being outside in the sun as it takes a while for my eyes to adjust to the dimmer light. This is one of the main reasons the OT suggested that I should have a scooter.

I think this is more like my brain is not recognizing that I have stopped moving upward once I am fully erect. So I end up being taller in my mind than I am in reality. So this is why I am thinking it may be a form of vertigo.

hmmmm Dennis, if i actually ever felt tall even in 9 inch heels, it would be a stretch of my imagination lol but kidding aside, do you mean that when you are first standing, your environment feels further away than it actually is?

If so, then could you be talking about proprioception (where you are in space)?

http://synapse.org.au/get-the-facts/proprioception-fact-sheet.aspx

I do have proprioception issues, can't close my eyes without impersonating a tree falling, I often think something is further away than it actually is, hence why i'm constantly knocking things over, poking people in the eye and thinking the floor is level when its not or a crack is a step etc. oh might explain why my son runs away screaming nooooooooo, when he sees me with the hair clippers, he kind of like his ears lol

Cheers.......JJ

I read your explanation & I immediately though vertigo. I've not experienced this particular feeling but have had a lot of vertigo. I have heard people explain vertigo as spinning, the floor opening up etc & I think it's very subjective & individual.

It will be interesting if any one else has experienced similar. Take Care, Karry.

Wow, Dennis! What a trip!  No, I haven't, but we're all so different, and our perception and proprioception can be altered with MS.  Is this a new symptom?
