Hi everbody, question about insomnia onset, severe

Hi all,

I have not been on in awhile.  I hope everybody is well.

I have a question regarding INSOMNIA?  About 6 months ago, I started having insomnia, only to sleep maybe 2 or 3 hours and waking up instantly.  At the time, I did not think anything about it, but now as time has gone on, it has become severe.

My neurologist gave me some more Ativan for it, but I try not to take it, if I do not have to, but eventually through a week's time with the insomnia, gradually I am turned around like I'm working midnight shift.

I read online somewhere that this could be caused by additional lesion formation in the brain.  Oddly enough, none of my lesions have yet to show up on MRI scans.  My neuro says it could be over the 10 year mark before they do show up.

Also another thing, similar to my original onset of symptoms after a dental extraction in 2003, I went to the dentist for just 2 fillings.  The dentist gave me no epinephrine at my request with the local, but BAM once again, 30 minutes after I got home, severe onset of blurred vision/paresthesias with out of body feeling, which lasted about 2 or 3 days and got better.  When I called my neurologist during this episode (because I was freaked out), he said it was not related to the dental procedure and coincidental....lol

Okay, thanks all......

Terri

When you are in bed, follow this breathing technique, until you feel drowsy. You can also do it, daytime to boost your immune system.
Build up your timing gradually. If you feel tired or dizzy, stop and resume after one minute.
Anulom Vilom pranayam –
Close your right nostril with thumb and deep breath-in through left nostril
then – close left nostril with two fingers and breath-out through right nostril
then -keeping the left nostril closed  deep breath-in through right nostril
then - close your right nostril with thumb and breath-out through left nostril.
This is one cycle of anulom vilom.
Repeat this cycle for 15 to 30  minutes twice a day.
Children under 15 years – do 5 to 10 minutes twice a day.
You can do this before breakfast/lunch/dinner or before bedtime or in bed.Remember to take deep long breaths into the lungs. You can do this while sitting on floor or chair or lying in bed.

I take restoril almost every night.  before that I tool 3mg Lunesta.  If I don't take anything, I lie awake for house, sleep intermittantly for 15 minutes at a fime for a total of about 2 hous a night.  No Fun.  symptoms get worse without sleep.  So, if I get addicted, i don't care.  At leist when I get enough sleep I can see correctly and have the energy to keep up with the 11 month old.

Thank you, everybody for your answers.  I, too, thought it could be some type of sleep apnea.  I go to my neuro the 7th, so will see what he says about it.  I know he does not like giving me Ativan very often, nor do I want to be addicted to anything.....

Take care...

Really sorry to hear that.  I have central ap and a lot of 'lack of effort' episodes which they believe may be obstructive ap (2 minutes snoring the entire night?).  Anyway, don't have a machine yet but hoping for the best when I can get it.

Maybe I should rent first... .

Have you tried ritual?  Like taking time every night to treat yourself to something relaxing like hot tea?  It's taking the time for yourself that makes the most difference, I'm told.  I would guess that anything that signals the beginning of a sleep cycle would help and eventually your brain will get in step (fingers crossed).  You'd have to be patient but even if it doesn't help you sleep you deserve you-time : )

What ever you do don't languish in bed upset that you can't sleep.  I've been chastised for this by doc.  Get up and do something quiet (not eating - will wake you and add to stress when you gain weight).  Then try to sleep  again.

I haven't slept good for years..also, like your friend, I can go wothout sleep for days.  I had the sleep study test and I do have sleep apnea so I am now on a c-pap machine....although it seems to be working I do not feel any better, they explained that its because I have too many issues going on..I wa so disappointed...

I take ambien and trazodone to sleep now..

If you haven't had a sleep study yet you need one.  I didn't even know I wasn't sleeping well before mine and found I had less than 12 min REM one night.  Also diagnosed with PLM so instead of rest I'm wearing myself out.

Sleep meds on a temp basis may help get you back on track.  Explain your concerns to the doc.  I was given a very low does of ambien which I could double if necessary (which I did the night almost no REM btw).  This kept me from stressing about potential addiction.

I have a friend who goes through episodes where he can't sleep for days at a time and the neuros haven't been able to figure it out.  Keep a log of everything.  You may be the one who eventually finds the missing key.

Good luck.

I've had insomnia related to my prescriptions for MS before - like Ampyra.
I would hate to not be able to sleep but 2-3 hrs a night.

good luck with everything,
Kelly
