My favorite soapbox..............

Yep, it's time again to dig out the red and GO RED for Women and Heart Health.  Tomorrow, Friday Feb. 4 is the date that the American Heart Association designates as that special day to focus on women.

Do you know that one out of three women die of heart disease?

Do you know that more women die of heart disease than ALL of the cancers, combined?

Do you know, despite these facts very few women worry about their hearts.  They do worry about breast cancer, which is far less likely to happen to them and even more less likely to be fatal.

It has been 3 years since my heart attack - I am one of the lucky women who survived to talk abou this to others.  Unfortunately most heart sisters are buried.

What can you do?  Know your numbers........ cholesterol, weight, blood pressure are all big risk factors.  If your numbers are high, make a serious effort to lower them.

Absolutely stop smoking - it is the worst risk factor of all for our hearts and it ain't so good for our brains, either.  Believe me, I know how hard it can be because I gave it up after 35 years.... my heart attack helped me put them down and never pick them up again.

The GO RED  theme this year is MAKE IT YOUR MISSION, and I hope you will take on that challenge and encourage men and women everywhere to take care of their hearts - we only have one and it deserves to be treated right.

Just because we live with MS doesn't mean we get to ignore everything else....  take care of yourself and the ones you love.

Friday wear something red as a reminder to yourself and others that this is the most important health issue facing women today.

be well, go red.
Lulu

PS I just delivered a "survivor" speech at our local GO RED kickoff tonight - I will post it on my journal if you want to read my whole store.

OK, that really helps re: impending doom.  I also want to get a feel for what a heart attack feels like.  It has to be horribly scary.

It's really wonderful all the public speaking---wish I could hear it.

Get your jammies on when you can and lay in your comfy chair.

Hugs

Red,
The sense of impending doom is what sent me to the ER - read my journal and you'll see my HA didn't happen until after I was there.... It is why I preach to eveyrone here that you must listen to the voices.  Whether it is your heart or MS or something else, we do know our bodies best and instinct is a good thing.

I did an interview first thing this morning - about 5 minutes on the radio.  Then a lunch time gig - hand out  pins and literature -

I'm tired and ready to be home and in my 'jamas but the day is not over yet.
hugs, L

Hi Lu,

Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge with us!  I look forward to seeing your speech.  I think the fact that it kills more that "all the cancers combined" was what hit me just now.

The other thing is that I don't understand the symptoms of heart attack in women.  I have heard the nausea thing and arm weakness but that's about all.

Did you have the feeling of 'doom' before yours?  I have heard of that as well.

Hugs

Heart disease is big time in my family. My father had a quadruple bypass years ago, and other members of my family have had heart attacks... right now my biggest fear is my 17 year old nephew.. he has wolfe parkinson white syndrome. He had his first attack right here in my house 3 yrs. ago.
Thank God I knew enough to check his pulse after I noticed how sweaty he was, and was not moving from my chair. very scary,, he was transported via ambulance to a hosp. 45 mins. away for the right care. Luckily, 3 years later and one heart surgery, he just celebrated his 17th birthday today.

It must be that I knew to wear red, eventhough today was the day I wore the red jogging suit! LOL

May God Bless you!!

Pam
