OFF TOPIC - WEAR RED FRIDAY (please!)

From the American Heart Association -
National Wear Red Day is Friday, February 6. How  will you Go Red For Women?
With the help of men and women like you, as well as companies and volunteers that support us, we have made a significant impact around the issue of women and heart disease. In fact, in the last six years we have raised awareness of the fact that heart disease is the number one killer of women and also raised over $153 million towards much needed research of cardiovascular disease. However, our work is not done. Heart disease is still the No. 1 killer, and there are too many women who are not aware of this disease and  the actions they can take to reduce their risk, and as a result are dying at the rate of 1 per minute. It’s Our Hearts. Our Choice. Together we can beat heart disease.

From me- yes, you have heard this from me before - I survived a heart attack last year.  Dig out something red to wear on Friday - a dress, some lipstick or some special ruby slippers.  Please join us on Friday to help raise awareness about this #1 killer of women.

Had to wash the shirt, but it's red.

Comment: $153 million in 6 years, when there are 300 million Americans?  Surely we can do better than that.  When you consider the costs of medical research, it sure sounds like a very small drop in a very big bucket.

Ess and Terry,
How about some RED nail polish?  :-)

A side note I'm not sure if I've mentioned here before - a very common symptom of heart problems with women is a sense of impending  doom.  Yes, the medical community does list this as a real symtom - don't ignore that little voice in your head and heart if it starts talking to you about a problem.

thanks!
Laura

I have PT tomorrow so I will find something to wear.  However, it is going to be a problem...I look awful in red.

I will start looking as I know how important awareness is and how heart disease can effect not only the patient but everyone in the family.  My mom has heart disease and my stepfather of 28 years (more like a dad) died from heart disease.  So I will do.

Will do, Lu. I'd look awful in red lipstick, and have no red slippers, so would a velour track suit in a soft pinky red do? Gotta wear something warmmmm!

There's loads of cardiovascular disease in my family, including 3 deaths, all among males. (Grandfather at 37, father at 64, brother at 53.) Nevertheless I too may one day get diagnosed with a heart problem, and so may many others among our women members. We do need to focus on women's heart health!

Thanks all - women's heart health is an overlooked issue.  We are focusing so much on this MS (or possible MS) that we overlook the fact that other parts of our bodies need attention too!

My best,
L

I found a red shirt on sale at Fred Meyer the other day; a nice one from Columbia Sportswear; I'll wear that tomorrow!

I've done the local Heart Walk a number of times, but just don't feel up to it this year.

My mom died from heart disease a few years back, one of my best friends is going in soon for an angiogram; she's in a wheelchair because of atrial fib. and other heart issues.

My best friend and one of my sisters both have valve regurgitation, my sister having had bacterial endocarditis because of hers.

I've loved the Go Red since it first started.  It doesn't hurt that I look pretty good in red, ha ha! :o)
