Just thought I would tell u about my TN. It is my most painful symptom of my MS. It is on my right side, and the pain is "usually" towards my ear, going towards my eye and my cheek. Last month was my most painful episode. I did IV steroids which helped. It is EXCRUCIATING for me, and has lasted several weeks.
Once mine comes on, it takes about 1-2 days to worsen and I never get relief, until it ends, which is at least a week for the shortest episode.
I take Trileptal 2 x per day, and now Copaxone, which "hopefully" will lesson the occurrence.
Wishing you well,
Michelle
Hi,
I have TN as well and my neuro in 2004 put me on Neurontin (gabapentin) for it which was a life saver for me. TN is so severely painful unlike any pain I've ever had. Neurontin is also very inexpensive/affordable.

There are actually three branches of the trigeminal nerve and one can google it and find a picture.
I was told my face pain was atypical face pain since it doesn't travel along the traditional path of the trigeminal nerve but the treatment is the same. I took Trileptal for my face pain until I had an allergic reaction. It did wonders. There are other drugs available too.

Mine is on the right side. It starts in my head just above my ear. Travels down behind my ears into my face, over to my nose, and into my jaw. Really bad ones go into my neck.
My sisters is higher. If she touches her forehead it sets her TN off. She has been on tegretol but can not tolerate it and stopped taking it.
I take Trileptal and Klonoptin. Both together help knock the pain.
I am not sure there is a specific route for TN. Maybe there is.
