How to get help with nerve problem while taking Coumadin?

I am a 52 year old woman who had mitral valve replacement 2 years ago.  I have a titanium valve and will be on Coumadin the rest of my life.  I also have severe lower back pain, to the buttocks, hip, side of leg and into my foot.  I have not been able to find a doctor that will do anything but refer me to Pain Management and they prescribe pain medication.  My cardiologist said that under a hospital setting I could be put on hypren(sp) so something could be done to my back.  Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be able to be done.  Obviously no doctor is going to want to do surgery.

Hi,

Yes you are right NSAIDS cannot be taken along with Coumadin as there is a risk of bleeding in the stomach. This risk is there with all the pain killers.
Oxycodone is safe but it is not providing you any relief. I am not really sure what more can be done by way of conservative treatment apart from physical therapy.
It is good that you will be consulting a neurologist soon. Do keep us posted!

Thus far I've been told I have some nerve damage at the L4 but not what is causing it.  I haven't found a doctor that will even prescribe an anti inflammatory because of the Coumadin.  1-1/2 years ago I was sent to a Pain Management Clinic and now take 3-4 oxycodin a day.  It takes the edge off the pain but it is never gone.  It just keeps getting worse.  I use to not be able to sit down very long without spasms in the legs and feet. Now it is hard to walk or stand because of the pain in my hip, leg and foot.  I do have an appointment with a neurologist next Tues.  Hopefully I'll get some answers or direction.  I am getting desperate.

Hi,

How are you?
Severe lower back pain raises the suspicion of nerve compression in the lower back due to disc herniation or disc prolapse.
I would suggest you to undergo a CT scan or MRI of lower back so that the exact cause of lower back pain can be identified.
The conservative treatment will include rest, physical therapy under supervision, alternate heat and ice therapy and anti inflammatories like Ibuprofen.
Hope this helps!
