Sharp pain on left side of head and face?!

Hi,

I have been experiencing a sharp wave of pain (every 10-20 seconds) on the left side of my head.  It feels a like an electric pulse which travels down to my face and jaw.

The top of my head (left side) is also a bit senstive to touch.

No history of migraines or anything similar.  And generally, I feel fine.

I'm breastfeeding, so can't take anything other than paracetemol which isn't helping.

A visit to the doctor needed?

Thanks

Thank you for your question. This may be Trigeminal neuralgia as you have typical one sided facial pain extending to temple and eye( ophthalmic branch of trigeminal nerve may be involved) and sore gums of the teeth of same side (maxillary branch of 5th nerve). Trigeminal neuralgia may have a triggering factor like recent history of tooth extraction, touch, cold breeze or hot sensation etc. which you need to evaluate and avoid. Drug of choice for trigeminal neuralgia is carbamazepine but as the dose may vary according to severity therefore I would advice an oral medicine specialist consultation or at least a physician to confirm this diagnosis and get you treated accordingly. Take care.

Sounds to me like TN.  See a neurologist.  Doctors can do nothing for you but prescribe drugs.  Neurologist can truly help you.

I have TN.  Had it for many years.  Finally had CyberKnife radiation, which stopped the pain.  Took about 30 days for the pain to finally cease.  TN never goes away - while mine is stable, I still experience shocks and numbness on the right side of my face.  Very miserable disease.  I've had it for 20 years.  Does not show up in blood tests.  Go to a neurologist.
